Ditto "Dat!"

While shiny new and slick looks nice and turns heads, I really enjoy a well loved original!

That's a nice one!

Here's my recently acquired 74 100% original pant, zero rust, 2110cc w/built freeway flyer. Loving it but changes are ahead! Laughing

Probably because I am a Vanagoner, have had a few Jetta's, familiar with a lot of decades and decades of various models but I really never put someone using 'the thing' meant an actual model. I'm not even sure they are even road legal in Canada. Right now I have two vehicles and the only reason for that is I don't drive my Vanagon once the salt flies, so I keep my rusty old Tercel which is still a performer. Double insurance bad enough, I don't want to go triple. But in another life for sure.

They are most definitely road legal in Ontario, Canada. Even with no doors or the windshield folded down.

I am quite surprised the police let you carry a 9mm pistol in a door pocket like that, we have to keep them on our persons in a holster, in a glove box or in the trunk.

Figured maybe in Northern Canada during hunting season they would relax the rules because of the bears, so you could carry a heavy rifle inside the compartment, but that's a different story

Thanks, I wish the gas tank was as clean. I've been having problems with it cutting out and traced it back to a rusty gas tank. Also the PO cut the tube that goes in the tank. So now any crud that makes it through the screen gets sucked down the tube.

About an hour of your time, and a wee bit of your hard earned cash and that problem will no longer exist! http://www.jbugs.com/category/vw-thing-gas-tanks-sending-units-gas-caps.html Or get a new tank, screen, outlet pipe, and even the "anti small kit" from here: http://www.thethingshop.com/products.asp?dept=14

Nice nonstock color -- especially with the hardtop! Very vice indeed!

Stock rims now sandblasted and powder coated silver/grey....finally got all the electrics working, engine tuned and inspected with Texas Classic plates; otherwise, just a real original beauty and runs like a VW "Thing" should !

Congrats! It looks like it would be stiff competition at all shows. Very nice.

Schwankster,
Do you have any pics of the thing right behind yours in that pic? It looks like what I'm doing to mine.
Thanks, Chuck

I uploaded a few in the Gallery. Just click on the Gallery tab, then click on the Thing/181 section and there are a few pics of the "military" style thing as well as a 1971 German military 181 (the khaki colored Thing).

Ironically, the green military style Thing is owned by a 16-year old kid. I met him months ago at a local gun show, and he & his father were asking me about my Thing that I drove to the show. We talked for a while, and then parted ways. Fast forward about 6-8 months and they are next to me at the show with their new Thing! It already had a military theme with the paint and stars when they bought it, but they are adding to it with the black fenders (chopped front), bug-eye lights, ammo box in the back, and they just added an M-1 Garand air rifle with an original WWII Garand rifle mount/holder that they will mount in the Thing.
