I finally got my bus I bought off ebay from 3 years ago. I had a friend store it at his barn in Idaho and he finally towed it down.

It's missing the middle seat of course, but the front walk-thru's and rear bench are tattered OG material. looks cool though.

Well the title says that it is a '61 and I think the taillights were put in by the PO.

I took the case to the machine shop today, and hopefully will have it going for the Jerome Jamboree in Sept.
I also found some nasty rust on the rear cargo shelf. the PO hap put up fiberglass insulation behind the "custom" trim panels, so anyone that has a passenger rear cargo area laying around I'd be interested in it. I'll post some pics of that mess as soon as I can.

That's not too bad; you should look at the "before" picture in my plexiglass window over engine thread!!

Best of luck on your new project. Once I get far enough on my bug, maybe I'll sell its parts car and buy a bus. By that time, I'll know what I'm doing on restoration work and I'll know how to pick a good one. Of course I didn't get along with my parents when I was a kid, but now that I'm off to college I think my parents are the best folks ever because they let me keep old cars in their yard while I work on them!

You might try to see if you can buy a brand-new repair panel. J.C. Whitney sells them for bug floors, dunno about buses. It's much easier when you have the right panel.

Thanks for the info, but one of my bus friends from work is looking for a panel section for me. If I cant find one, i will just get some bulk sheet metal and make my own section.

I'll have you know that that window is double-sealed and either of the seals by itself would be enough to make it airtight. It just looks bad right now because I haven't carved the foam down to a curve or carpeted the interior yet. You're just jealous because I don't have to climb under my car anymore to work on the transaxle.

But I'd say go with the sheet metal for the bus. The point of the JC Whitney panel would be that it would be corrugated. Unless you can do your own corrugation, your sheet metal would have to be thick enough to not bend. I know some people turn up their noses at the mention of JC Whitney, but the point I was getting at was buying a pre fab panel gives you the corrugation and the right shape right off. If JC Whitney's sheet steel is somehow not as magical as some other company's sheet steel, well, excuse me.

Well, JC whitney doesn't make the panel that I need, but my friend hooked it up yesterday with a rear section from a crusty '61 23 window that he was chopping up.

Dude...you really don't have a clue, do you? That plexiglass disaster in the back seat of your bug is not only a ridiculous idea, but it was slapped together with a bunch of crap from Home Depot!!!
What could you possibly need to work on that often, that you need a trap door??? Axle boots-installed right will last YEARS...Starter-fix it right, and FORGET it. VW transaxles are very durable , have very few wear items, and are practically maintenance free, unless you running the Baja 1000. Wait...I've seen lots of class 12 beetles, and NONE of them have wooden, gate latched plexiglass trap-doors over the trannies.

Sorry to call you out like this dude, but to say someone is "just jealous" of that abortion in your back seat...forget my neighbors...even your neighbors could hear me laughing. Rolling Eyes

At least I have positive things to say about people, and not negative. You don't see me trashing someone else's project. I do what I do with the limited time and money I have because I enjoy tinkering and inventing. Should I give up on my ideas, especially ones that work, just because they don't always come out "pretty"?

But what is the big deal about where parts come from? Pray tell, what are the "APPROVED" sources for things, then? Kant seems to be implying that there is something immoral about my choice of materials because you can get them at Home Depot. Yes, I did get the parts from a lumber yard, not Home Depot, but Ace Hardware--same difference. Where do you think people buy lumber from, Kant?

You know what - right now at least, my bug does look horrible. With that foam, the window in the back looks like an explosion at a pudding factory. There is a piece of grass trapped between the two panes of the window. One of the boards came out three shades darker under the stain than the others. I cut one of the boards too short and had to nail a 1/4 inch strip of wood onto the bottom of it. You can't tell from the picture, but none of the blocks the latches are screwed to are exactly square; they're all off by 1 or 2 millimeters in a trapezoid direction. One of the deadbolts has it's bolt handle facing opposite all the others. One of the deadbolt receivers is a little bit back from the edge of the plexiglass while the others are flush.

And you know what? It's only going to get worse. It's going to get further and further from stock and look weirder and weirder as I modify it, and I will probably turn it into an art car. (Google "art cars" to see what I mean.) It won't be the fastest, or best looking, or most well restored car on the road, but it will be my car.
