Ok, so while we are on this subject, I have a thermador that I found at an antique shop for 45.00. I actually ran it on my oval for a year or so. Couple of things happened, and for good reason. These things are old. It worked, but eventually it started feeling like my string was going to break, so I quit pulling it. Next, my thermador sticker started fading like hell. Are there any repros of this sticker? lastly, my screen fell out. Not sure what held it in, but would like to put it back. _________________ 60 Rock Grey Vert |

The screen on mine is more or less a jam fit- but mine is a little early. It has the red and grey decal (unable to find duplicate) rather than the plentiful later model blue scalloped decal. Mine is rebuilt- but before Samba came along- so I winged it. Soon though I should replace the 50 year old straw- kinda musty when damp. Smells like Retriever, no, Lab. _________________

|
|
I've read a dozen or so posts on thermadors and I can't find anyone that has replaced the material in the element. It seems like it would be fairly easy to replace the current material that is in the element with a swamp cooler pad from the hardware store.
Is there a reason no one has talked about doing this - or is it a given part of the restoration and I'm just asking a stupid question?
thanks in advance for the help... |

In my Thermador model, I'd bet it's a matter of unrolling the fruit rollup, install new cut-to-fit straw, then re-rolling the turkey wrap. if your diameters remain constant due to correct thickness of mat- I'd bet it would go fairly simply. _________________

I just went to the arts and craft store and bought a similar shaped wood one and painted it.
Or try a place that sells lamp parts. _________________ Rick

Not to revive an old thread or anything but is there anywhere that sells parts to fix up these old coolers? I have a Thermador and it's missing the back plate and front screen. Believe it or not I actually caught a bird in it last summer . Why help would be much appreciated! ! _________________ Cody

The back plate will be impossible to find. If yours is round like mine- and I had your problem, I'd make a resto-custom project of it using an old pan lid.
The screen is easy- buy a scrap of steel netting at your neighborhood garden supply store- and trim to the right oval shape. _________________

I have a firestone but it's shaped just like the thermador (almost shaped like a can lobe). Any ideas how to make an end cap? ? _________________ Cody

Oh boy. Without using someone else's for a pattern- that will not be fun. Search the next big show with your camera in hand. Also, they are all over Pomona- tomorrow. It is a fabrication job and a couple steel garbage can lids to cut up in my opinion.
I am still surprised that is the only piece you are missing. The end cap supports the axle for the screen tube. Can you please post a couple pics of what you have? These things come up for sale all the time- so I'm sure folks here can help tell you if yours is worth repairing. _________________

New here and I am currently trying to fix up a Thermador Car Cooler. I have a few questions.
1. What type of string would you recommend. I know someone mentioned natural or synthetic string and not dyed. Any specific? Paracord, nylon, cotton?
2. How is the string routed? I know it goes through the cage, but does it wrap around the cage only once and out the vent?
3. How do I “load” the spring?
I got the back part (with the vents) off and I replaced the material in the cage with the blue dura cool pad (hope that works). Just need to figure out the spring and string and seal it back up. (Should I just use roofing tar, or aqua seal tape?)
I’m sure I’ll have more questions, but any and all help is GREATLY appreciated!

One other question I had was the decal placement. I see on some pictures there are two little “nipples”- on others pictures, the decal is placed right under those. Mine had the decal placed on them. We’re those “nipples” on there as a quick quote as to where to place them and they just did mine in a rush/wrong!? |
