Trevor,
I was able to remove and replace front transmount with out removing engine.
1. Disconnect shift coupler.
2. Remove the transimission/chassis ground strap from the chassis.
3. Remove the 4 bolts that secure cradle transmounts.
4. Remove upper rear engine support and slide tube.
5. Remove engine cooling rubber bellows.
It may be necessary to remove exhuast.
Use a rolling floor jacks to raise engine and transimission just enough so they move forward 2 to 3 inches. The nose cone portion of the tranmission will need to tip and pry back enough to get the mount and sleeve to come out and go back in. It should take 2 to 3 hours for the whole process, take your time and be safe.

Watch the axle boots. When you slide it back, the tranny may drop onto them.
When you pry it back, don't pry against the brake line that is above there. My parts car donated that line to someone that did.
It will need to come back about 3" to get the old mount out, and the new one in.
Going back, you may need a second pair of hands to help guide things. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Thanks for the replies, I still can't find my manual so that should help quite a bit. Now I just need to see if anyone in town carries the part. |

Trevor,
Front transmission mount P/N 311-301-265A
Centering sleeve P/N 311-301-343
These parts are common with early sixties Type 1's. If you can get made in Germany front transmission mount that would be preferable over other countries.
