Not sure if that would have come with chrome bumpers and hubcaps though, would it?
Nice car, seen it last year in Terryville. I think it was Dick Christiansons at one point.... _________________ John Henry

Not a big fan of those "nipple" hubcaps, but that is definately a beautiful car. I only hope I can make my 63 look half as good. Man, do I want a Split... |

Some exported cars back then did have chrome. |
But I thought they started export in '49? If it's a standard I thought bumpers/hubcaps were supposed to be body colored. _________________ My, you've been naughty. How.....Delicious.

They started exporting to the US in '49, they were exporting to other European countries before that. I still would question whether or not VW wasmaking any chrome bumpers for any cars in '47. They were still CCG era cars and in '47, they were just struggling to build anything, never mind dress stuff up.... _________________ John Henry

I have a bunch of books around and you do see the CCG cars (and KDF cars), some with chrome bumpers. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"

Yes there were some early kdf cars produced with some chrome trim, especially the bumpers and the guards, I have pictures of them in books as well. From what I've read and seen though in the pictures is that most of these cars with the chrome accents were done more promotional event or car show related purposes held by VW. Also, in 47 in particular the "Colburne" beetles (early Surrey UK VW dealer) were remaking the early cars with two tone paint jobs and chrome bumpers, hubcaps, even chroming the emergency brake handle.
If I recall correctly when speaking to Guy last year at Terryville, there is an interesting story behind his car which I believe indicated the car originally had the chrome bumpers, not 100% on that but I think the car is an accurate restoration of how it originally was delivered, have to ask him again in a couple weeks.

I'll dig them up. I was just looking at some not too long ago, and clearly remember it. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"

Guy's 47 was previously featured in the July 2005 issue of Hot VWs |
The article mentchened how this guy had the documents to prove that this car was indeed fitted with factory chrome! I think he really just claimed it was chromed because when he found it in the 70s it had chrome on it. But yes there were a handful of them produced this way, according to the article! _________________ To his their own PBJ

Ben Pon, the Dutch VW importer in Amersfoort, brought in the first genuine export VWs in 1947. Many of you must remember the popular photo of a row of dark-colored Beetles viewed from the nose, with the tall Mr. Pon standing next to one. Those Beetles did have chromed bumpers and hubcaps.
VW offered an "export" model starting with the 1949 model year, which did have a bit more chrome and trim than Guy's car.
When I worked for the VW factory in Wolfsburg Germany from '80 thru '83, my very first business trip was to accompany somebody to drive to Pon's distributor office still in Amersfoort. By that time, the business was being run by his son. I was not as interested in vintage VWs at that time though.
While attending the Lottermann's great Vintage Meet in Germany back in '91, I met a man (Mr. Walter Herrmann, who has his type 82E Beetle featured in 9/05 HotVWs) who authentically restores vintage Beetles. He had a '47 Beetle at the show which was painted a more satin-look dark green, which was the correct sheen from the factory at the time. I do not know if the "chrome package" on Guy's car upgraded the paint to a glossy finish. |
