I have searched on here, and on Type34.org, and cannot seem to find the name of the original radio that would come in my 63 Type 34. I would like to put up a want ad on here, and would like the speecific name? Or if anyone has one...$$$
Thanks

This is the correct "top of the line' radio. You'd just have to flip the faceplate, I believe. The seller says in the German part that it fits many other 'oldtimers' as well. I bought a radio for my Benz 180D from this seller, and was very pleased. There are also many other sellers in Germany on German eBay that sell old Blaupunkt and Becker radios that are tested or refurbished

Double that on the plates. They look the same as a regular T3 but are in fact made smaller. Yet another T34 only part _________________

I don't claim to know much about Blaupunkt's but I'm pretty sure that is at least a late 1960s model, probably 1970s.
And the faceplates don't flip. |
Are you sure those faceplates don't flip?
I had a 1964 Mercedes 200 in for an engine overhaul last year with the exact same model radio, but a different faceplate on it. The car was purchased by the guy's dad in Germany in late '63, and it had the literature for the radio in the glovebox. so I know they go back at least that far. There is a similar model without the upper "box" that is later. Another giveaway is that it's a 6 or 12 volt. After '67, as far as I'm aware, all of the Blaupunkt and Becker OE radios were 12v, and you could buy an underdash inverter if you wanted to retrofit a late radio to an earlier car. But again, all of this I've sort of absorbed by osmosis over the years, don't take any of it as gospel truth.
If notchboy would quit moving to another state every week, I'll bet he could find time to help out here.
EDIT: Blast you, Notchboy! Foiled again! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

From what I understand from a long ago Internet conversation with Mathias Klassen at www.oldtimerradio.de the chrome/ ivories are all that is available for refurbishing. Herold tests and repairs and does a cosmetic rebuild on them before putting them up for sale. The knobs and pushbuttons are easily changed, if you can find some good used ones. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Thats the money shot Ev. The T34 plate as you can see needs to be narrow due to the narrow indent in the T34 dash. You are not high Tram (this time ) I to have see more than once a T3 plate upside down on a radio. It does look like a fit if I recall. The wider top T34 shot Ev has is the first Ive seen of the larger hole. I may need to pick Lees brain on that. Look into the pure site if eithor of you have the link. I dont have the new one to check off hand yet. But I am willing to bet its an older early 60s unit.
As far as put my cents in more, Tram. Tell me about it. Im going friggin nuts borrowing others computers to check my shit and converse! I realised I won that cats eye on ebay today. Its been 3 days since it closed. It was like a forgotton gift, sheeez I need my computer and life up an situated _________________

I take that back! On the radios Ive seen flipped (2 only, its late and the brain is well.......) I remember it looking not quite right, almost a good fit. Here is my later 69ish nos, papered radio in my 63. Black buttons for you too. Larger upper hole.
And I dont know when them buttons canged color and why. I do know I have chromies on my early style radio in my 62. But Ivory does seem to be dominant throughout. _________________

Tram,
I'm looking for a correct stock radio for my '63 T34 also. According to Lee what came in the T34's was *almost* always a Blapunkt Frankfurt model like what Everett has. I put a working AM radio in my car for the time being as I had the correct face plate / knobs and working speaker. I'm just having a hard time finding a working, ivory buttoned Frankfurt that isn't $400. _________________ '54 Kombi | '57 356 Coupe | '57 Samba | '62 Notchback | '63 Beetle (36k Original Miles) | '66 Pigalle Sunroof Squareback | '70 Westy |

I went out and looked at mine. It is a Saphire Bendix, but with a face plate like the Blapunkt that Notchboy showed but turned the otherway around. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Hey off my thread! J/K
One other question that I have is.. Did Type 34s share the same radio as the Porche 356s of that era??? _________________ To his their own PBJ

The strange thing about radios in German cars from that era that you have to remember is that they were ALL dealer- installed. The most you could get from the factory was called "Radio Prep", which meant you got an antenna hole, radio bracket, and maybe the speaker.
I've seen all of the Blaupunkt models in any given 1950s/ 60s VW, Porsche, or Benz, as well as Beckers and the occasional Telefunken and Grundig! The general accepted rule of thumb, at least in Benz circles, is that if it's the correct era and it fits with no mods, it's considered correct for judging purposes.
In USA, you got Sapphire/ Bendix in your VW, and usually AM only. About the only way you could get a Euro radio with four bands and all sorts of "ahead of their time" features like station seeking, automatic local emergency band break- in, and DIN plugs for add on tape players and 45RPM under dash phonographs was to get Euro delivery and have the dealers in Germany install it, or pay out the nose through a US dealership owned by somebody with German connections. VWOA REALLY frowned on that, though, as they had exclusive contracts with Bendix and Motorola for quite a few years. In my Benz, I'm able to play CDs thru the OE radio with a portable player and DIN adapter.
A real prize that sometimes goes for MORE than the radios are the really hard to find OG Hirschmann red or blue tip antennas. You could also get rear speakers built into really cool Eames- era type boxes, usually Blaupunkt or Becker, but I've seen a couple Telefunkens. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! I thought I had a prize on my Ghia. It had a "Blue Tip Bosch" antenna. I fugured I could recoupe my loses, and sell it to a Porsche person. But when I took it out, it crumbled in my hand. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
