just wondering what pan i can use to swap the pan off a 65 square? got an extra one off a 70's square but the original pan off the 65 is pretty bad so what year can i switch the pan with? up too a 66? or how late of a model? is there a difference with a later models? _________________ 56 Oval- sold

a late square will be IRS rather than the swing arm rear suspension... _________________ póg mo thóin

The "pans" are the same all the way through.. It is the rear suspension that is different. Swing axle versus IRS. IRS started in 1968 on the automatics, and continued on all T-3's with the '69.
The only thing to watch with changing pans, is that the title in most states goes with the pan and not the body. The VIN number under the rear seat is the legal VIN as far as law enforcement and VW goes. The others are too easy to swap. _________________ Society is like stew. Independent Rear Suspension. Has CV joints.
Your '65 would be swing axle, but the suspension portion is interchangable. You could reuse your old one. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Why would your front suspension be falling off? The bulk head is more a part of the tunnel than the pan half's. |

Hello,
I did my share of pan swaps in the past.
There are some minor differences.
1: automatic pans don't have a clutch cable conduct - even no cut-out + cover for the shifter coupler at the nose of th gearbox.
2: IRS and Swing pans have different brake line routings at the back.
PITa to swap of create if you don't have both to see the difference. The T-piece copper splitter is in a different position too.
3: Don't forget about the seat conductors !
4: Small acces hole at the shifter base vs seperate piece - No problem though just harder to fit a new shifter tube bushing.
These are them all.

Also, heater controls are different on early vs. late pans. Not important unless you need to maintain original appearance. |

That '70's pan you have in the gallery is really nice. The problem is it is from a '72 or '73 model that uses the later style seats, also a different location for the heater controls. I personally would fix the '65 pan with the pan haves from the other '72/'73 pan you have. You will have to weld your outer seat tracks on the pan. You will also have to remove the center (triangle shape) seat mount. I looked at the pic of your frame head, is it rusted through on the bottom? I think a good welder could fix this also. I still wish I had that choice pan sitting in my garage, as I need one for my '65 square. |

if thats all there is then i would repair, it would be easier to cut out and weld a new plate into it than putting new pans in |
