Did they let you pump it yourself? |
Idaho lets you do it yourself. Oregon doesn't trust you to be able to figure it out.
Love Craters of the Moon. Eery and amazingly beautiful. |
Sheesh. When I read the post I thought it said Oregon.
I know the skinny about them pumping it for you. One guy tried to mate the nozzle into my tank like he was trying to reproduce another bus.
Them pumping it has something to do with their employment for the population rules.
Craters of the Moon is rad. |

I have some NOS bows but I'm noticing they are not very snug to the roof in the center.
Were the ends shimmed at the drip rail to fit snug in the middle at the highest point of the roofline??
|
It is normal for the bows to have a little wiggle room and not fit tight at the top middle. You don't want them too loose, or too tight, but juuuuust right.
While I have seen some shimmed at the bottom, I think it was because those were cut a little small and Westfalia shimmed them to make them fit.
(Then again, I have not seen a new set installed back in the day. wood does change shape. ) _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Cuddy has a suspect generator. Pulled engine, replaced, got on the road at the crack of four in the afternoon. Made it to Umatilla area in WA for the night. Taking the Columbia Gorge byways to Portland, should get to Olympia Tuesday night. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

The rack that has been on here for the past few years is a '58 rack - and last Summer got mated to our '58 subhatch.
I started restoring a correct '56 rack for it a few weeks ago.
I blasted the legs, welded up some pinholes - and coated them with some PPG red oxide primer.
These early legs are crude. Looking at them in bare metal it's amazing how rough they are.
Jake had milled out some European beech slats last Summer when he redid his rack and had some extras so we traded for some parts he needed. I then cut them to length, drilled and countersunk 81 holes to mount to the legs, 12 more holes for the uprights, and eight more to mount the support plates. Once that was done I beveled the edges and lightly sanded them.
I finished them with two coats of shellac, then two coats of dewaxed shellac, followed by four coats of cetol light.
I thought this was going to be a weekend project. |

Silver paint.
I'll probably shoot this again tomorrow. I only had enough hardener for two coats and I think there are some thin spots on the bottoms. It was hard to get good coverage with two coats going from red oxide to silver metallic. |

He wasn't happy with the colour of the silver paint. Very embarrassing.
He doesn't want people to point and laugh, so he says we can't take this bus to Kelley Park. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

I must say, I have a new respect for Greg and Clara when it comes to early westfalia buses. Everthing thing about them take twice as long as a deluxe bus.
Great work on the rack Greg. I think it took me months (I quit keeping track of time) to get mine done. I am glad that is behind me. _________________ SOUTHERN INTEGRITY AIRCOOLERS

Greg from what year did they start hot zinc plating the racks?
I have a 59/60 for one of my SO 23 and it is plated.. |

Thanks Paul. Your rack looks way better than mine.
I remember commenting about how I thought your tent poles should be a lighter color of silver and had I been a more experienced painter I would have known to keep my mouth shut. I absolutely could not get the DCC Concept metallic silver paint to lighten up. I used their lightest shade of silver - I tried adding white but it only turned it grey and made it look darker. I also thought it was too glossy. I poured the flattener in (added maybe 1:2 paint to flattener ratio) and it still didn't move it where I wanted it. Too glossy. I think the spray pressure may have alot to do with final color of metallic paint but I don't know for sure. I also think the metallic paints have alot more clearcoat built into them than the solid colors. I'll have to talk to the paint supplier when I have more time.
I wanted to have the rack done before Kelly Park and since the paint supply shop was closed on Sunday I ended up using a bright silver rattlecan basecoat and a dupli-color "paintshop" satin clearcoat - that comes in a quart and you spray it. Its a lacquer and smells really bad. The end result is not perfect but it's alot closer than what I was getting with the concept paint.
Fabio - I have never seen an early welded foot rack galvanized and I have never seen a later pressed foot rack painted silver. I think the transition on rack styles was sometime in '58. |
