|
|
I just picked up this car for my new son. It's a Java green 64 built in December of 63 with brown chord vinyl and beige and brown door pads.
The car is probably one of the most original cars I've had the pleasure to own. The story goes that the original owner drove the car until 1969 then put it in his garage up until a few years ago when he was getting close to retirement. He was getting the car freshened up to hit the road again when he passed away. I've actually got a copy of the 1969 ownership that they signed off on when they sold the car proving the last time it was plated.
The interior is nearly perfect with the only flaw being the stitching on the seats is starting to let go. I'll have my upholsterer remove the covers and restitch them. The material itself isn't dry or rotted at all.
The 40hp is the correct motor for the car, verified by the old 1969 ownership which listed both chasis and engine numbers. Engine runs like a top after an oil change, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, valve adjustment. Obviously still 6 volt.
The body has some surface spots but generally very nice.

Yup. He's just over 2 months old. I enjoy my cars so much that I want my boys to have an aircooled car of their own so I bought my 2 year old a 63 when he was two weeks old and now this 64 for my newest little man.
I just think it would be very cool growing up know that you own a car. Let alone a vintage air cooled VW.
We put my 2 year old behind the steering wheel every year and take a picture instead of a growth chart on the wall.
I'm going to trade them a diploma for the keys. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

It may sound extreme but I'm trying to be realistic. By the time my sons are old enough, there won't be any solid cars for sale at a reasonable price besides late 70's super beetles Not to offend, just not my thing.
This way, I'm able to ensure they'll have a solid earlier car when the time comes. It's also a good investment. Early 60's car's are reasonably priced but are starting to gain momentum over the past couple of years. Imagine the value of a 1 owner 1964, well preserved, original beetle in 2021 when my newest is 16. By that time, it will have been last plated 52 years earlier. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

Just don't mess that beauty up like that green beast in the pic. What is that monstrosity? Hope it is not yours. |

You worry about yours and I'll worry about mine. Seriously, what is wrong with people?
I've got one custom in my collection and I'm proud of it. That the first car I ever built 8 or 9 years ago. I'll never build another custom but I'll never sell that one. Don't like it?? Convince me why I should care? Unless you're saving early 70's cars for stock restorations, I wouldn't worry about what's in my garage. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

What a gorgeous find! I think you're right in that these early 60s Beetles will experience a "renaissance" of sorts, similar to what the Oval and Splits are experiencing today.
I too was lucky enough to get a pretty decent single owner, original, 40hp, 6V, 1963 with accompaning documentation. Unfortunately she's going to need a right channel replacement (along with a few other, more minor odds and ends), but I'm going to try to keep her as original as I can. |

I'm the father of two girls, 19 and 17. Just don't be too disappointed if your 16 year old son doesn't appreciate the value of the car when you tell him it's his. Kids have a way of turning out different from what you expected or hoped. Not necessarily bad, just different. |

I'm prepared for that (even though I've started the brainwashing very early) but at least I'll have a choice. I'd hate for either of them to want one and not be able to find or afford a good one. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

Some older shots a couple of years apart from each other. The Euro bumpers are now gone replaced with rechromed oe with over riders. Correct interior, Albert mirrors. Correct 40hp currently being built.

I like the seats, brown cord is neat. |
The interior is awsome. The pictures don't do it justice. The brown cord is very cool and matches the squareback. I just wish I could find somebody that reproduced seat covers in brown/brown cord. ISP has a couple of rolls of it but I think they wanted $150 o $200 per yard off the roll The material is very good on the beetle but a little brittle in the squareback. I've had the whole squareback restiched and I'll do the same with this car. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom
