I've always been wary of wasserboxers. Always figured that a flat four should be air-cooled, like god and porsche intended. I'd never own one. No way. Uh-uh.
Until last month. Now i own a real oddity, a syncro transporter.

Saw the ad on the samba, saw the price, and thought it's too good to be true. Too cheap, must be a mess. Went and took a look, and was pleasantly surprised. Aside from some minor surface rust (door edge nicks, gravel chips, a coulpe of spots under the windows) there is NO perforation anywhere. Needed a muffler and tailpipe, and a new oil pressure sender, but otherwise was mechanically sound.

It is a transporter that had been used as a work truck, so the solid, straight condition of the body was surprising. the clean condition of the interior even moreso:

No rips or tears in the seats, no cracks in the dash. It is a very spartan interior- bulkhead behind the seats, no rear seats, no carpet, no glovebox, no... well you get the idea.
Next step is to upgrade the wheels and tires ( now done, pics to follow), replace the exhaust (done- pics coming soon), install the interior and windows from my 81 westy, touch up the paint, and it will be ready to roll. _________________ OG JHC

Brian ... you can be proud of your mature choice in transportation (and good sense not to post it in the Rants). Looks like a servicable driver (I've considered the double-cab version on more than one occasion). Hurry back. _________________ Get ready for the injection

Pushy, pushy.
Very nice, bl. I must say that it looks much better with the new wheels. Quite an improvement. So when do we get to see yours doing this? _________________ VW-less right now...looking

Drive one once. Then you'll get it. Syncros are awesome. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Well.......
You don't buy one because you are trying to compare it with an old bus. Its 4 wheel drive, gets 20MPG, can haul up to 7 people with the right seating configuration, and drives like a caddy. Not to mention creature comforts like ............heat.
Thats awesome BL, I've been on the prowl for a syncro for quite some time to replace my 85 GL. I'm very jealous. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

That is cool...I took my drivers test in an '86 vanagon! I loved that thing! I've been trying to get the wife to drive one instead of the Expedition gas-hog! Now that were moving above the snow-line...its all syncro now! And those Crew-Cabs are AWESOME! You guys in Canada have alot more of those to choose from than us. Have fun with it!... It would look sweet with some cookie-cutters! |

That looks like a score BL. Now you have a decent 4x4 to tow that POS rover out of the snow drifts at the end of your driveway! |

With the new wheels it looks like it's ready to jump! Where in Ontario did you find this? I thought they were more a european thing. I'm gonna keep my eyes open, Hubby may need a new truck. |

Way to go Brian, its OK that people like 70fasty don't get it, that leaves more cool Vanagon stuff for us
I'll stick with the 2wd Vanagons, they don't go out in the snow/salt, and less ha$$le to fix..... _________________ Tom

I picked it up from an ad here on the samba, and it was located not too far from you, up in holland landing.
I am going to try to get some history on this beast. most syncros in north america were optioned out GLs and westies, or crew cabs. a "stripper' syncro transporter seems like a pretty weird combo- maybe a special order, as i can't see a dealer spec'ing one of these.
Progress continues. the exhaust is in, and now it is time to gut the interior and install the westy interior. anybody want transporter three- across front seating, cheap? _________________ OG JHC

Nice find. I have seen a couple of Syncros around and never knew them to be that rare and/or expensive. Just never thought of it. I do often see a Syncro double cab and we wave at each other in downtown Seattle. _________________ Bill
