|
|
Well since know one was able to provide aany input to my previous thread
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=135041
I thought I would provide some more detail.
I have a late model swing axle rear end 68, here is shot of where the front of the tranny bolts up to the swing sub frame.
Here is the early model swing axle sub frame 66, I am using the mounting plate from the 66 that goes between the tranny and the sub frame. There is a big difference in overall depth almost 2", and the holes on the 68 are too far apart.
So why the difference between the two?
Does anyone no where I can get the tranny mount for a 68?
Thanks guys,
and Annie.

That bottom one looks like the one for IRS T-3. Hmmm, If it is '68, I think it might be a 1 year only, or the one from an IRS might work.
I have a couple trannies in the shop, but they are IRS. And I don't thnk they have any mounts on them.
I will look in a little bit after the Brazilian F1 GP is over. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Russ-
Any help would be great! I am fitting up my new Rancho tranny and this is really holding me back.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

Well here are two shots of mine that I took by reaching the camera cuder the car blindly. It is a swing rear section that was changed to IRS with weld on mounts. The tranny is an IRS and it looks like they used and adapter of some sort. Were the stock mounts rubber?

Well then this must be the adapter to get the IRS into a swing. It will be available on of these days when I install the 901 and build new mounts.

THATS IT!!!!
Rokcrln that is the same set up I have, swing rear end with IRS pivots grafted in and I am dropping a IRS tranny into it.
I spoke with Martin at DDB and I'm sure I thoroughly confused him
Did you make this yourself? It doesnt look too complicated.
What is the thickness of the material and what is te off-set depth in the bend?
Thanks a million.

Sorry I did not make it but could very easly but that car is burried in my shop waiting its turn. That pic was one of about ten I took trying to get one. I had to just reach my arm under the car with the camera and click. Sorry if I had some spare time I would be glad to bend one up. It should be an easy part to find I would think.

It appears that this is the one I would need, I will try calling CIP1 to get more data.
Thanks again,

that cip mount looks to be a 3 bolt nose cone transmission into an early car, I don't think that's what you need,
if memory serves, type 3 manual transmissions used 3 different mounts depending on the year,
1961-1965 versions, then 1966/1967 only, then 1968 and later versions
the 1968 and later versions are not available new anywhere, if someone has it its going to be good used or NOS
it will look like bubble #6 in the parts book view
Now what rear suspension frame are you using, the 1st photo or the 2nd photo? if it’s the 1st then you need the 1961-1965 mount, if it’s the 2nd you need the 1968 and later mount,
someone will correct me if I am wrong...
Anthony / ISP WEST
ps :I possible forgot a 1973 only late mount also... |

Anthony thanks for the reply,
I am using the top picture along with a IRS transmission. I have the mount pictured as #6 and I dont think it will work for these two reasons:
1. The two bolts that are used to slide into the sub frame are to close together.
2. The added distance (thickness) of the #6 mount will push the tranny out past the frame horns.
If you look at Rokcrln's picture there is minimal offest only to cover the bolt head between the sub frame and the tranny.
The #4 bubble looks alot like the one on the CIP1 link. I will mock everything up tonight and get a measurement between the tranny and subframe.
Thanks again for everyones help,

#6 is the 1968 and later mount, you can not use that one with the 1st photoed cross member, you need the to use the to 1965 mount part # 311 301 265 or a repro urethane equivalent...

So now I have a question... I want to swap out the 6v tranny in my notch with an almost new 12v tranny from a '67. As posted above, it seems that up to 65 were specific and then 66-67 were specific, but I am unsure how. Will the 12v tranny bolt right into my 65? If not, can I swap out parts from the old tranny onto the new one? I am also going to do all new tranny mounts, so does anyone have an opinin on which ones are good to use. I have heard that the neoprene ones are crap... but I don't know. _________________ Jim in Sacto -

I just bought a swing axle rear frame with irs brackets already welded in for my '73 fasty. So I have the same situation as stated ('73 box to early front mount). How did you get on installing your gearbox ? is this mount readily available ? I'm in the UK so will try and source over here.
cheers. |
