So no slammed splits allowed John? I'm in NH and all and would love to go. But mine is slammed and the paint isn't original etc. |

my personal opinion was that Der Käfer Fahrer should have allowed all 36hp VW's, not just those that had an oval window. Of course the fact that I drove a 36hp lowlight ghia with the unfortunate birth year of 1959 had everything to do with that. |

But now you have a split Craig...... although the "judges" may have an issue with those rims......
Seriously, drop me an e-mail, lets pick a date, we can meet in Nashua overa beer and some food (I know a new Irish Pub I have been dying to try out..) and discuss all of this....

Looking forward to a fall foliage event next year, this year would of been a washout on Columbus day, and now for some reason its like springtime weather, crazy New England weather!
I don't think anyone here would purposely want to exclude any enthusiast from attending. Its important to acknowledge though that the original DKF club and associative cruise was organized to promote a higher standard with the earliest genre of stock VWs in the hobby.
All groups and clubs have charters, visions, goals, similar areas of interest, comraderie, etc. Most folks tend to join clubs or groups where they share similar ideals, its that simple. With the DKF, as once said here by someone, the original group may have been seen as an elite group, but they were not elitist.
For next year, who knows at this point, but I believe an event "in the spirit of the DKF" will likely be the thought process as to how the event gets organized. At this point I'm just happy to get together with the "local" split owners over beers! Meantime, folks have just under a year to find a decent pre-57 or to "de-slam" (its only 4 bolts....). I guess I also need to start thinking up what type of commemorative cruise memorabilia items I need to put together.....

Guess I'll be heading to the back of the bus then huh?!?
Cause I'm going even lower, narrower and shinier! by next fall. Maybe a turbo? But I should have the correct trim, bumpers, doors, and a new correct seat but oval style material interior. Oh and the front fenders and headlights just need to be put on. |

You are entitled to your opinion, of course. Personally I don't want to follow a rolling yard sale down the winding roads of New England in the fall. But that is just my opinion, to which I am entitled...... _________________ John Henry

I love your car. Theres something to say about OG splits. I'd drive it just like that. It reminds me of my car.

So, you don't like cars with the parts changed out. How about if all the parts a reproductions? Wouldn't that be a non original car? Rolling yard sale?!?! |

I prefer cars restored to original condition. To the extent possible. If original parts are available fine, reproductions fine. I prefer cars that look like they did when they were new. That is what *I* prefer.
I also respect that others prefer other things, be they "rat", custom, hot rods, whatever. I am fine with that, I am not on a crusade to try and change anyone's mind.
Original has many meanings to many people. To me "correct" is more important to original. "parts changed out" is an inevitability. I am sure there are no cars with the original tires, spark plugs, points oil and gas (remember, cars were deliverd to their customers with oil and gas). So in my book, no car is original. Period.
"Rolling yard sale" was a tounge in cheek comment about Jim's "STP" split. Whether I like the look or not, I think Jim was somewhat of a pioneer in that area. There seems to be a fine balance between original, correct parts, patina, rust and custom accessories. Not sure what that mix is, nor do I care. In my opinion, they all look like driveable parts cars, but again that is my opinion.
Unlike some people I have encountered in these forums, I am perfectly happy with "to each his own". My cars are not perfect, there are many incorrect parts on them (at least until I finish my std.!) but they are mine. I don't expect anyone to persuade me to let them rust, to lower them or put a rusty roof rack on them on which I can place more rusty parts. Just the same, I don't expect the Jim Buys of the worlds to start search for a complete set of matching, 14mm head, Kamax fender bolts for hias split.
But back to the point of this topic, if I organize a cruise event, rest assured it will be geared toward my interests, and attractive to those other enthusiasts who share them. And of course the participating VWs will be a reflection of that, just like the DKF cruises of old...

Just remember, by the time you were a member of the DKF, there were many big window beetles on the foilage tour. There are many beetle afficionados how have been in the hobby far longer than you or me, John, that do not own a split or an oval. Even DKF members.
One of the founding fathers of the DKF has a killer slammed split. Oh, but he can't come. That's FUCKED. Good luck finding 25-30 stock splits and ovals in New England to go for a cruise with you. I guess it is the club for snobs.

Gosh Dave don't go that way. If John wants a to hold an event for stock pre '58 cars, who are you to say he can't. I am sure if you wanted to hold an event for non-stock early cars, John wouldn't be as upset as you seem. The point is: if he want's to put in the time and effort for something he cares about then what right do you have to make him feel that what he doing is wrong. The real snobs here seem to be the rat rods that have no leader. You want a event.......plan it and invite only your friends.....nobody here would be upset. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." You are missing a few very important points here Dave:
1. There werebig window beetle on the DKF tours, and that was the discretion of the organizer.
2. There was a lowered hot rodded Beetle on at least one cruise. (..and that was the discretion of the organizer.)
3. The DKF club is dead.
4. (and most important) I have no intention of resurrecting the DKF club. _________________ John Henry

I don't think he is saying that Bob. Sound like he is saying he doesn't like it and that I won't be sucessful doing it.
He said "good luck" growing grass under pine trees.
Lets see how many stock ovals and splits I can shake out of New England for a fall cruise..... _________________ John Henry
