x2 Those are definitely tooth tips off a synchro ring. This is not common to see. Trans should be disassembled.

Stuart,
Here is another picture of the vent and were I install them. This one is 1/4in NPT (national pipe thread). 1/8in NPT will work fine and it a 1/8inNPT comes in most good quality tap and die sets.
Putting it in this area of nose cone will clear shift linkage inside and not much oil get thrown up there.
You need to remove the nose cone to do this you don't want the chips inside the trans.
Like has been said you don't want it to thread in to deep, about even on inside or at most a thread showing. Use sealant. Blue Loctite works well for sealing and the fitting from not coming loose.

Keep looking for a vert until I figure out you meant vent hole.
I think you are going to see a lot of oil slinging up in that location.
There are reasons that VW made the vent hole in nosecone, one is because there are less moving parts to throw oil around.
A vent for the trans is for when it gets warm and air expands it has to have a place to go. When it cools down air is drawn back in.
A expandable bellows attached to a fitting would work too and would make for a sealed system.

I'm trying to find the gear ratio(s) for my unknown swing axle--I suspect it's a '67, since it appears to be 12 volt(?). It's in my '59, but since it's not a "split" case, I know it was swapped by a PO.

The casting numbers on the case are: 113 301 163
And the numbers stamped beneath are: 9643197

Since there are no letter code, does it indicate a '66 or earlier?

Im looking at getting a used trans for my 59. They said it came out of a 67 but the only code they can find is D0042783. Any ideas of the ring/pinion on it. I want 4.12. Thanks

I have 2, 5 ribs with out reverse. Would like to know how difficult changing them out would be and weather gears from a 3 rib would work? I'm hoping the fix is in the dif box and not the gear box it self.

Is there a proceedure to follow for adjusting a shifter? I had a 3rib rebuilt by a reputable builder in Cali. I swapped out my type 1 for the 3rib and put in a 10degree kit. I am having a problem with it popping out of 4th. I didn't have this problem before the swap. It has done this since installed.

Here in the USA a GE type IV engine came with a 228mm flywheel and clutch and uses a different bell housing.
You can change out the bell housing to a bell housing from a 091 transaxle and the starter too or change back to a 210 or 215mm flywheel and clutch to fit in the 002 bell housing.
If it a 1971 or earlier 002 transaxle, the mainshaft will not be long enough to reach the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft.

I have a 1970 DC and want to swap my 3-rib for a 5 rib. Has anyone done this swap before? What will I need to change to make the 5 rib fit?

Yes it will fit into your Double Cab without problems. It is the same length as the 002 that in there now.
One differences you will have is a 1971 and later 002 uses a throw out bearing that uses a guide sleeve and no donut on pressure plate. You could always switch out the bell housing and use the old style throw out bearing that on the early trans and keep the pressure plate you have.

I don't remember when the change happen on the front mount. If does have the later mount it easy to change back to the early style. The mounting studs are in the same location, just longer for the different mount. Studs can be changed out to shorter ones if need to.
Also you can change out the shift housing (nose cone) if needed.
If you have the shift housing off, I recommend install one of the steel thrust plate to keep mainshaft bearing from wearing into the shift housing.
