Ok so I was talking to one of my friends who has a baja bug. We got to talking about my 71 Fastback and cam up with this idea about making it the only baja fastback around...... So I got to thinking about it and was wondering if it is possible and has anybody ever done it before _________________ AJ (Andrew) Torris #1 |

Yes it has been done before... theres a jacked up squareback in my town that belongs to a surf shop... its a promotional vehicle... looks VERY cool!
I would think baja-fying a type 3 would be the same as a bug! |

There was a yellow one at my high school... in 1981!
And a blue baja square that looked pretty nice.
I had a baja square back then too, got it from a towing yard in so cal for 250 bucks. Threw a upright motor in it, it was all I had spare, and ran it for a couple years.
They are easy to do, no cutting the front beam for lift, just adjust the torsions. But fender hacking is required for much larger tires. The nose overhang and longer motor get in the way for hill ascents. And the extra weight of the t3 makes it a bit of a boat off road compared to a cut up baja bug with the same motor. |

I bought a 3" body lift for a type 3 a couple years ago. I've always wanted a Baja Square, but it's on the back burner right now. They sold the lift kits back in the 80s. Almost every vendor had them. Here's one that was in TheSamba.com classifieds recently:
And another I found for sale in Oregon several years ago.

my very 1st type 3 was a fully caged baja squareback! awesome car for the desert... gutted interior, full cage, 1641 and NOS I bought it that way. I had a blast in the eye-duh-hoe desert ith it. Use to remove the pop outs and the rear hatch for blow through ventilation and dust relief. put them back on at night and sleep... on a piece of ply that fit from the rear to the back of the front seats... cheap good fun! _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

I've got an '90 Trooper that's about to run out of a tranny. Wanna buy the front end and make it a 4wd Fasty? The bullet-hole mags and 30.5x9s I've got on it would really round out the package. _________________ Tony

Why are we killing you? LOL I am not totally sure I am going to do it though.... I mean I am debating on making it a Baja, or making it more of a show car but the hardest part is the money isue.... But I like the Baja Bugs a lot because i am a surfer and love driving down onto the beach and going surfing in parts where it is a long walk if you dont drive onto the beach.... so i am either going to save my money and buy a baja bug or just make my fasty into one I am not totally sure though... _________________ AJ (Andrew) Torris #1 |

You could get away with raising the fasty a bit and get meatier tires. I couldnt see why you would need to do any typical Baja mods? Especialy if your just sand tromping. Those pics neil put up remind me of a couple of Oregon guys that used to post a year or so. They had balls out stump jumpers for the tree trails and they looked alot like that first pic. You dont want that do you? _________________

Hell. I can hardly give type 3's away here in Idaho. I've got 11 in my back yard right now. I paid anywhere from free to $100 for 7 of them. Besides, a sandrail gets cold when it's 20º outside. _________________
