| Swivel seat busses store the spare in the well in the back just like a "normal" walkthrough. Swivel seats are cool. |

Right on Tom, SS's are sweet. This '60 is an odd duck. Not sure if there are any other SS Kombi's w/ the half-walkthru bulkhead (and corresponding passenger seat) floating around or not...
Seems like I've heard there are less than a dozen bullet (or earlier) walkthru Kombis, and less than a dozen SS Kombis that survived. Has anyone seen this particular SS setup before? I seem to recall that "traditional" wisdom says that SS's didn't come w/ passenger seats from the factory.... (Although this one appears to have... )
It also has the panels in the cargo area.
Edit: Here's a couple other pics...

Swivel seats usually have smaller partitons on both sides, e.g.
so that one is really weird. _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search

Here's one I looked at a few years ago. I shoulda bought it, it was a '60-ish double-door swivel seat panel. Unfortunately, somebody had thrown out all of the swivel seat mechanicals and installed 914 seats....D'oh!

Thanks for the props UZI. This bus surfaced last year after being off the road for 30 years. It must have cost the OG owner some bucks (at least for a VW) to come outfitted as it did. If I do decide to sell it (the odds of which probably aren't very good as I haven't sold an air-cooled ride in nearly 15 years...), it would be cool if it would go to someone who would use it and preserve it. I'm sure you'd fit that bill. OTOH, one can only hoard so many vehicles, I do need to thin out the herd at some point, and it's NOT a westy...lol.
Cool DD Tom. I seem to recall admiring that bus on Thom's site back in the day. I was joking about where to put the spare tire, just wanted to leave some nice bus porn w/ a dufus sounding question for a few folks to stumble upon and smile about.
I can't find a picture of OG Kombi rear panels on the web... The roof ones are sagging on this bus, but I think they're all there (sans one cargo door). Kind of a cool bonus. Can anyone confirm whether these were originals or not? They appear to be based on the fasteners. They are a slightly different color than the cab panels though, if that helps. Anyone have a pic they'd like to share?
I'll post all the other digi pics that I've got, unfortunately, most of the pics of this bus are on 35mm... I will try to scan an outside pic or two for you guys. Sorry I don't have more digi to share.
Killer story on how I came across this one. Will type more out when time avails.

WOW. there are pictures of a setup like that in a book that I have. I thought that it was some weird prototype thing. add one more to the known SS kombis. I would love to see more pics and hear more details. _________________ .

Here's another pic of a swivelseat Kombi from vintagebus.com. Like yours, it appears to have a regular passenger seat.

that one does not have the partition wall behind the passenger seat. the story on that bus is that the original owner ordered it for tourist delivery and it was ordered with a passenger seat, but when they went to pick it up, it only had a drivers seat. the owner pointed out that it was ordered with a passenger seat, the guy looked at the paperwork and agreed and sent the owner off to luch and when he returned, there was a passenger seat installed. so the story goes. _________________ .

Thanks for the pic Tom, and for the info. Lind. I read about that '62 in the forum archives, didn't know which SS the person was referring to though.
If you think of the title of the book w/ the picture of this setup, let me know. Probably some obscure German book that I'll never see, but it would be nice to find a copy if possible. |

Interesting how the swivelseat mechanism's switch is reversed on the passenger seat.
I know swivelseatdave drew much ire for what he did to this bus, but the double swivel seat does make for a pretty decent camper setup - at least when mated to a walkthru so-42 kit. Hell, any of the swivelseats do for that matter - sans jumpseat and sink unit. A folding chair in place of the jumpseat and you're ready to camp! |
