Is your car a deluxe or a standard?

To start to answer your question, I think that standard Beetles (non-Deluxe) from that era had wheels which were fully painted in the car color. Color choices tended to be on the "drab" side, like grey and dark blue; the "Garwood" book "Car of the Century" would show the details.

Could someone that has CoC check exactly what it says? According to the newish Richardson book, all oval standards had L87 or L81 hubs and body color-matched rims with the exception of 54-up Jupiter grey cars that had full painted Jupiter grey wheels. So far I've found this book to be pretty reliable.

Garwood focuses on US-market VWs and only lists trim details on standard model colors through early 1953; which is about the time VW stopped exporting standard models to the US. For L225 Jupiter Gray standard Zwitters, Garwood lists the wheel rim colors as L225 (outside rim) and L87 Pearl White (inner rim).

However, Garwood has several errors with wheel rim colors, especially with Ovals. For example, L351 Coral Red Ovals had Chestnut Brown outer rims, not Coral Red and at least one 1954 sedan color (probably L275 Light Beige) was available with Sealing Wax Red inner rims.

Jupiter Grey Zwitters? Shocked According to the color charts on this site, and Richardson, there's no such thing.

The lack of a complete, consistent set of information on this topic is frustrating. Brick wall I thought Coral cars had L74 Rusty Brown outer rims. And I wouldn't doubt at least a percentage of L275 '54's had SWR inners (though Richardson also doesn't show it), as that had been the standard on white/beige cars since the beginning of two-tone rims.

The US-market, standard Zwitter that once belonged to the late Steve Wood now resides in CO and still wears 95+ percent of its og gray paint. Whether it's L225 or another shade, such as L21 Pearl Gray, I couldn't tell you.

I think you're right on the L74 Rusty Brown rims on Coral cars (had a brain fart). The SWR rim came off a Feb '54 car (og color not known) and still has the og tube-type Firestone Phoenix tire.

My Sahara Beige September '53 (L272) has Sealing Wax Red hubs with body-colour rims and with the VW logo on the hub cap in red.
All the rims are dated 3/53 and show no signs of ever having been re-painted so I'm convinced that is the factory spec.
It is a European model though (British-market rhd) so it might differ from those cars that were available over the pond.......... Wink

Is this colour combination valid also for 54 deluxe sunroof euro model? Body paint is light beige L275, so rims would be then L275/L221, right? There are also cars with single color (L275) rims, like this one:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/320398.jpg
but that is standard model, isn't it.

Think 54 and 55 has the same, so yes.

The car in the picture is a Deluxe with repainted rims in body color.
