The rear hinge cover in the 65 square is looking kinda ratty. Is there any way of refinishing or painting it? _________________ John

It's a one-piece steel stamping finished in what appears to be an off-white crinkle paint. I also have one I need to spruce up, so if anyone knows how to duplicate the original color and texture please jump in. |

It's the original single piece. It almost looks like it is covered in 'glass fibers. _________________ John

Rust-oleum textured white works well.

Rust, thanks for the tip. Do you just spray the paint according to can directions, or is there a trick to get the proper texture? |

Just spray it on. Clean and primer the cover but try to leave old texture intact. _________________ SQUARE NUT

So which cover is the original? The one piece metal or the two piece plastic? |

They both are. The one piece is for early year cars. And the
two piece are for later years. _________________ SQUARE NUT

And the 2 piece plastic ones just melt in your hands when you try to take them off your parts car. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

no - only if you were trying to pass it off as 'original' or 'restored'.....
and the late, plastic covers are terribly brittle by now -- I removed mine (very gently) and painted them, since they had yellowed over the years....turned out quite nice.... _________________ póg mo thóin

Sounds like the ticket!
I plan to paint mine with por15 (got some lying around, surprise surprise), It should seep into the cracks and bind them up a little. fill the holes with caulking or some other sturdy plastic, GENTLY shave and sand, then paint them up with something oil based.
SALUD! |

I just put in a one piece steel hinge cover in a 1971 squareback. Two things, You need to drill and tap some new screw holes, and run wires for the light. I got the cover off thesamba classifieds. It came with wrinkled paint, I thought it was just a poor after market paint job. |

Oh, I'll be getting one of those! .
Didn't know about the metal ones prior to this thread..
(once again, ignorance is it's own punishment!)
They'll cover those nasty rips in the headliner..
Thanks! |
