Agreed on the estimate and paint. It's a very early SO 42 and has the slanted jump seat which indicates that is most likely the original interior. Toss the rack and paint it the original color and you have a winner (albeit not at that price).
Then again, shiny buses sell so some drunk guy will pay too much for it as a gift to his wife (who will lose interest in it after the first month). No, I'm not jaded. |
Agreed. It also seems that a tin top Westy should sell for a few stages less than a pop top.
It does present well, though. Looks nice in photos, and appears to have had someone with an eye for detail getting it ready to sell. Not totally correct, but nice nonetheless. |
I'd think they would be advertising the "0082" SO42 fab number more than the correct "speedo date". Correct speedo doesn't even move the needle for me. After restoring a SO42 kit from start to finish.... it is beyond me why folks don't bother to heat the rubber trim pieces and glue them back into place. Very worth the effort IMO. I'll be shocked if it breaks 50k.... what do you say guys?- over/under on 50k? _________________ "If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do." -Warren Miller |

At an auction it only takes a couple of morons bidding up the price way past any reasonable estimate. Probably gonna go over $50K. |

Maybe they don't know the techniques. This is the first I am hearing about it. |

Lets be clear here that the T molding is what is available. The stuff around the doors is not.
Heat it up with a hair dryer, pry it off. Dunk it in boiling water and it will turn soft like spaghetti. Pull it out and cut the chipped part off square. Scrub with Purple Power, Simple Green or some other nasty substance to remove stains and yellowing. Really difficult stains should be attacked with quick swipes of Lacquer Thinner on a smooth white cloth. The solvent attacks the plastic but sometimes that is all that works. Once clean dunk it back in the boiling water to get it soft and have a friend standing by with a hairdryer and/or heat gun. Keeping the heat on the plastic, stretch and GLUE it back into the slot with polyurethane glue, stretching it as you go to make up for the shortage caused by cutting out the chip. Once in position, keep it warm while you clamp the loose ends into position so they cannot move while the glue cures.
If this does not work, you will need to find some off another cabinet. |
Not to take us off track... but thesamba is full of useful information like this. A simple "westy trim" search and there are tons of threads that mention stuff like Major Woodys post. When I was in restoration mode... this site was priceless. 100k for a 65 westfalia? No stone should be left unturned, imo.
EDIT- opps, didn't see the original date stamped speedo... 100k bus. _________________ "If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do." -Warren Miller |

Not to mention the "rare and correct full-length roof rack". It shouldn't get anywhere near the reserve but you know what they say about a fool and his money.
This bus is a bargain at $50k and would be a much better investment:

Agreed on today's pricing but try to find another one. Only 500 made and probably less than 10% survived (total guess). Only reason I wouldn't want it is no walkthru (love my SO 42 walkthru). _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

My SO42 is a bench and I love it. I also love the SO44 kit as it has a full length bed! _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Agreed.. bench seats are fantastic for several reasons...
As for the camper, maybe I'm just getting used to the higher prices or something but I bet it gets to somewhere around 50K at auction. Most folks at those deals just see a VW bus and don't know the difference price-wise between that one and "one of them with all them windows". |

Not the least of which would be that the passenger seat is nearly impossible to enjoy in comfort unless you have child-like proportions. _________________ nothing |

The full length bed is indeed a nice setup. The passenger seat in a walkthru is very close to the door and not comfortable to sit in (as Corey mentioned) but since I don't spend any time there, its not an issue. Being able to access the back without getting out of the bus is nice and for me it seems more open/roomy (especially when you pull the ice box out).
I think most non-VW people just see it as a camper (whether it's an SO 23/33/34/42/44) and buy it based on emotion. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches
