|

Hi,
I have a set of OEM dual port upper cylinder cooling tins (not sure which model they came off). When I place them on the engine both sides (1 & 2 and 3 & 4) are offset over the cylinders. I'm a bit confused as the website below appears to show that the shroud and cylinder tin is centered over 1 and 2 cylinders, not offset. Only offset on cylinders 3 & 4.
http://www.volksbolts.com/faq/cooling.htm
Is this website correct? The cooling tin I have is offset for 1 & 2, more centered over cylinder 1.
Are there different types of dual port upper cooling tin for the type 1, with different offsets?
My plan is to use these with a modified shroud (doghouse back and 1961-62 front) with an alternator. Just wondering if I have the correct upper tin for this, or if there are different upper tins that effect how far backawards / forwards the shroud sits on the engine.
Thank you. |

Tins are tins. Yours look totally normal. I opened your link and saw no pictures that resemble the perspective and view of your picture, which might show a tin centered over cylinders.
Note that the top edges of your tins that overlap the lower front/rear flanges of the shroud align perfectly with short wedged flanges that are molded into the top of the magnesium engine case; those essentially signify that your tins are fitting correctly and those help block air escapeage from underneath the shroud/over the top of the case.
Make sense? Don't let parallax confuse you. _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom) 😏 |

The cylinders are offset, not straight across from each other, which is why the opening for the fan shroud is biased on the cooling tin.
The only cooling system out there I am aware of that centers the incoming air between the cylinders is Jake Rabys DTM, aka, “down the middle.” The fan shroud is offset the same amount as the cylinders so that the cooling air flows symmetrical over the cylinders/heads. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Thank you for your replies and understood about the ridges on the case aligning with the tins.
The part of the website that confused me was under the heading:- View Of Cylinder Bank Housing "1" & "2"
There are two photos below this heading. The left photo looks as if the tin is centered over 1 & 2. Maybe it is just the angle of how the photo was taken. It goes on to say "Here We Can See That The Fan Shroud Centres On The Two Cylinders - Essentially Pouring The Cooling Air Down The Middle Of The Two Cylinders Such That It Cools Them Evenly." I don't think that's correct as the tin (and shroud) are off center for 1 & 2, as are 3 & 4. |

Right, they oversimplified the wording and it's not exactly accurate. As you've found, the 3-4 side is similarly offset toward the front, VW engineers split the difference of the shroud/tin placement over the pairs of offset cylinders/heads.
The pic you're looking at is misleading due to the perspective (angle). _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom) 😏 |
