On my 90 westfalia (stock springs) I was quite happy with 1 turn (360 degress = 50% dialed in from full soft) on both front and back. Brake squat is still there but well controlled, and the ride quality is about right. Brake squat behaviour btw would be identical regardless of rebound setting. My goal is a balance of both handling and lots of travel to soak up the bigger hits. My typical hard right/left check (call it the evasive manoever) at 50km/h is nicely controlled and I noticed the van at speed on the highway is more stable with some fairly high winds last night.
The shocks in there were likely not stock so my frame of reference was a bit suspect in terms of what "stock" feels like.
Coming from a long history of autocrossing, the suspension feels just right. To be honest, given the high center of balance and mass, the van handles considerably better than a lot of similar vehicles I've driven. I won't be pulling 1G laterals with it like the autocross car, but my wife and kids won't be complaing either _________________ Cheers,

Little bit of movement on the bottom mount of my Konis. Both sides.
I have not pulled them off yet to check the condition of the rubber. Has this happened to any one else?
Replacment all of the bottom with after market parts?
Or just some rubber or urathane spacers.
I thought I saw a home made metal spacer somewhere. Two of them to keep the shock body centered. Like a large washer and short tube welded together. Thanks _________________

Mine did that, too. Its not hurting anything to be slightly off centre like that.
I don't think its anything to worry about - the shock absorber migrates over to a place that equalizes/centres the lateral pressures and settles in happily. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

I've owned my "87 Westy since it was new. 2WD, full camper, stock springs, 225/55 16's on 7.5 x 16 wheels.
Over the years I have added parts and played with lots of different mods. This weekend I installed a set of Koni Classic "Red" shocks - hey they were on sale from the Koni site. I can't remember another modification that so improved the character of my bus. The Konis replaced a set of regular (not HD) bilsteins. night and day difference. Maybe the best $400 I have yet spent. |

Just bought a 2WD Doka and want to lower it. Is the Dokas suspension the same as a vanagon? Was hoping to go with Weitec springs and koni shocks.
Thanks. |

Thanks for the reply. Your van looks great. What size are your wheels and tires? |

I had Weitecs with Bilsteins in a 2wd Doka. Very stiff. Coming out of Seattle on I5 I was bouncing in the air like a low rider. Too stiff and couldn't respond in time. I like the lowered look but would go with Carat springs and Konis myself based on comments from others and on my experience. But the Weitec with koni might be a better combo than what I experienced. Just a thought.
And to your original question, the 2wd Doka setup will be the same as the Vanagon GL. |

Stock 2WD 1980 Westy...Replaced my OG 33 year old shocks with Konis and guess what..it drove and handled so much better...duh..
I set them on their softest setting and the plan is to stiffen them up as needed.
Also, tires...Vanco D rated _________________ Currently:1980 Westy Westfalia Poptop (a total stock-look rebuild with all my favorite camping mods)

The adjustment on the Koni's is for the rebound only. Not for the compression. _________________

I have the Koni Classic Red on my '90 Carat w. highest setting and I like them...
my other '90 Carat has Bilstein HD they are good but I feel they're a bit soft to my liking...
well... you need to adjust to your taste... but the Koni Red are not easy to adjust once they are on the van... |

Hey guys,
quick off topic question:
Do the Konis come with the upper rubber bushings and nuts for the front shocks?
Mine are shot and I need new ones.
If not - where do I get those best?
Thanks for your help.
Are there yellow and red Konis??? This is how I know them from my other cars. Red was gas, Yellow oil.
Thanks
Best

They come with the nut but not the bushing. Bushing and washer is available from van cafe. _________________ Eric
