Bought the paint last summer, but the problem is that now Rustoleum seems to have stopped making that color. I'd like to paint some other stuff. Have you guys found any other "cheap" options for the blue? ... |
I am also wondering about some good options. I bought some Testor's model paint, but it it a little too light colored (I'd rather have darker if anything - this won't be for painting as Assistent, but maybe some other garage accessories).
I have seen the Humbrol/Tamiya/RAL/Revell codes, but can't find anything local.
Not sure if my body shop guy has a good way to give me a spray can option after he matches.
Edit: see review here - maybe? http://www.amazon.com/Oleum-269292-Rust-Oleum-Gloss-Stops/dp/B00F87S9D0 |

If you already have a Hazet item a paintshop can scan it and give you the closest matching paint by mixing paint. |

Picked up this 1950s (1956-1958?) Hazet Assistent 161L. Lots of small differences with the later Hazet Assistents; top shelf is less deep, has strengtheners underneath, the middle shelf has different sides and the chain connection is at the top and not the bottom, in the "bucket" at the bottom the connection of the uprights is different. One obvious difference is that these use a different rubber at the sides.
Would anyone be able to send me a picture / dimensions of the rubber correct for such early Hazet Assistent?

So the blue changed in '65?
When I compare my early 90's Assistent (right on photo) with my '52 Hazet 100 (large wall box), the blue of '52 seems to be a bit lighter (left on photo).
Actually the pre-65 blue is a bit more real light blue than the more greenish-blue after '65.
Is that similar to the difference you observed?

Wow! what a fantastic source for Hazet assistent information! I have been gathering old Hazet tools for a number of years not. I have several ols assistents and tol cabinets. Most are in pretty poor shape and will need work. I hope to start on 2-3 assistents and 2 cabinets for my garage soon.
I was wondering if anybody has a color code or recommendation for the pre '65 blue?
Many thanks, JK |

Sorry, I only got you this still screenshot from the production in the early 60s:
They put in the middle of the rubber the same sort of strip like in an old windshield-rubber (and with the same tool I guess).

Iīm sure, that any good paint job company has such a scanner, which you can hold at an already painted surface and got the right tone. But this is only working if you find a "good" spot of old paint, maybe under a rubber or the stop bar at a cabinet.
Or somebody could just post the color codes...
But itīs not necessarily given that you get it 100% right - I would stand next to the painter and take a look by myself.
Cheers,
Philipp |

I'd be interested in learning of a source for the old rubber and silver beading also. Some of my early Hazet assistents are missing the rubber. Does anybody have a source for the old style Continental wheels? |

Finally I found an early Assistent that still has the rubbers on it:
The rubber looks like this:
But this one is not my oldest cart. The one in the back is an earlier cart, I guess it's from '54. Regarding to vwmadeinireland's post it's got some more older details:
First difference is the colour, second the height. It's a lot lower than the other ones. Could be because of the single tray in the middle.
The lock is completely different; it's mounted unter the top tray an the keyhole is at the side.
Even the chains are different. And there's no hole for them in the middle tray to go to a second middle tray.
Another difference is the holding for a 4th rubber at the bottom tray. At last, the "Assistent" -lettering is yellow.

Accidentally I was a short-term owner of a 166TS Assistent with a cut out piece of the rubber strip.
So I took some pictures:

I can probably have some of these rubbers made if there is sufficient demand. |

Thanks GermanBay! Yes mine has also the yellow lettering for "Assistent" as I found after removing paint but not the lock within the top shelf but uses the locking bar. And it is indeed ever so slightly less high as the other ones I have.
Bought a second of these early ones from a different seller but proofed to be used in the EXACT same garage in the 1950s. That one still had some of the original rubber so I got 50 meters reproduced. It was completed today and should have it available in lengths of about 1.3 meters in 2 weeks from now.

Just got another old Hazet tool cart, still dealing with it so I cannot show any finished pic...
Trying to date the cart, I have some doubts.
Just one front wheel with blocking system, old style.
Capital letters on the HAZET logo
Black and blue knobs
Top tray painted with hammered paint (not gray)
Rear Continental tyres
anyone? My doubt comes with the capital letters /post 65??) with the early blocking system for the front wheels...
Some pics
thanks! _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

So after they changed the Logo in 1965 and had new brakes at the 16x Assistents in 1970, yours must be from between 1965 (or '66 - donīt know how long it took to change all the stamps) and 1969.
(The 172 HD was produced with these old brakes a little longer...)
1969, 1
1969, 2
1970

Here is my assistent, just got it yesterday. From a guy who used to be a mechanic at a vw dealership. Then owned his own import repair business. He said he got it 25 years ago so late 80's to early 90's I'm guessing.
It is in dusty but un-used condition. Has some paperwork, the original lock, and oil? Or hand cleaner? Still in factory packaging.
My question is how do u get the legs to fold down? I don't wanna force anything. Can some please explain / walk me through the process of folding the uprights?
Thanks. I'll try to post more after clean up. _________________ Why don't you have a narrowed beam yet?

Normally you have to turn the upper black handles anticlockwise as shown on the paperwork. That should loosen the mechanism.
Maybe also put some WD 40 on the hinges if they were not fold down since around 25 years...
...if that does not work I could ask for you at HAZET directly. |

I'm wondering about the recessed Allen head bolts, if I need to loosen those?
I can totally unscrew both top handles and they have long rods attatched. I am wondering if the uprights twist to Fold or pull up and fold down or just fold straight down. I can't figure it out?!
WD-40 can't hurt I guess. It was just so too hot in the garage to keep messing with it. I figured I'd ask for more advice before getting frustrated with it. _________________ Why don't you have a narrowed beam yet?

The Allen head bolts can be over tightened but how you "fold" the arms down is the key. The arms don't "fold down", they swivel or rotate around, so start by pushing the upright to one side or the other not toward where they will eventually end up. Notice that the upright is cut at an angle where the two parts intersect. You are really just rotating the arm on the angled face.
On one cart I had, the tip of the lock rod had broken off inside the upright. I couldn't get the upright to swivel until I turned the cart upside down and removed the broken bit.
Good luck! |

So I have a couple different assistets that need this or that. The main concern is tires. Can we get new ones to replace the old ones? Id like to make these look as good as they can.
