WAY COOL! i want to do this to mine ....someday..... |
seeing all these cute little tubs with people tucking 15/14in rims is making me regret my decision to rock some 17's which require some huge tubs for suspension travel
here's a good shot showing how large of a tub i'm rocking...you can see how it sits in relation to the vin plate:
it literally sat dead level with the rivets holding the plate on. i ended up moving the plate up a few inches before welding the tub in place.
all done.

wow them are big. giggity.
well got a little bit done today, work doesnt leave much time for progress.... and since its sunday, I couldn't go anywhere that sells pieces of sheet metal large enough to start welding the tubs in so instead I made cardboard templates. I'm just going to play it by ear for the top piece.
and cutting it close to the door....

I've been wanting to get my DC tubbed out bad, but I'll wait a little longer. HighTopBay, always digg your ride. After looking at your pix of your cut compared to A1steaksauce's pix above yours, they look a little narrow. Are you seats going to sit on there alright after your done? Regardless, can't wait to see your end product. Good luck with the progress! _________________ '67 Bug

The actual tub section will go in a little further than the cut out section and then the inner seat rail/mount will be raised with some 3" box tubing that way the inner rail and outer rail will be all the same height. The front/top corners will also be rounded off, not 90* angles. And thanks for the kind words! _________________ Louis DePaolis |

my tubs are very deceiving....but you're right i did push them way out to get me as much turning radius as i could.
i put a nice fat angle in them to interfere with the doors as little as possble, don't mind the wet primer:
and how much i had to tub my doors to accommodate them:
i can go full lock and my turning radius is fantastic. but again, if i was running smaller rims i wouldn't be having all these issues to work around |

Im thinking i can leave the door alone, narrow enough i think 4" king pin beam and 165 55 14 tires on stock wheels. leaves a little less to worry about lol _________________ Louis DePaolis |

Is there a lower profile tire that is reinforced sidewall similar to the stock or Hannock? I have a Westy that I lowered and want to find a lower profile tire. _________________ 71 Chianti Westy |

poke around on tirerack.com that's where i got mine from. they have a handy feature that allows you to filter tires by weight rating.
if you're a late westy you want a XL 94 load rated tire. will more than handle the GVWR of a westy.
there's plenty of low profile tires in that weight rating as well. |

Ahhhh...gotcha. The 68 has a 4" narrowed scratch built beam by me and a friend. Rear has 4.5" drop plates and is currently getting notched. |

Here we go!
Frame tacked in place.(The excess metal inside the edges will be trimmed off eventually)
All closed up
I'll grind down the excess weld and finish em up real nice
now to do it one more time on the other side...... _________________ Louis DePaolis |
