you can shim your rear to get rid of the camber.

Where would it have to be shimmed?

I just went from page 160 to here and didn't see anything. I'll do a quick search. Thanks

Found it.

"Actually, when lowering the rear, you can maintain good camber if you shim on the top bolts between where the spring plate and trailing arm meet."

that's it.

i went with a massive amount of lowering and narrowing on my rear so i cut and repositioned my inner trailing arm mounting point to yield me the same result Laughing

I was considering doing the same.

the only problem with doing so is that it's a very drastic change.

i'm narrowed 2.5 inches out back with massive frame notches for axle clearance. so to me it wasn't a big deal to simply reposition those inner mounting points as that wasn't more extreme than anything else i had done.

but if you're simply running drop plates out back and everything else is untouched i advise against messing with the inner mounting points and just shimming out the rear to correct the negative camber.

Cool. Thanks for the advice. I have notched the rear, too.

Hey kids.

I've got my Wagens West 2.5 inch drop spindles Very Happy . Was thinking of tackling this job this weekend. Just making plans here and I have a wedding I don't want to miss... I've never done much front-end work. How much time should I set aside for doing the spindles?

I have a good selection of tools, jack stands and an impact wrench. Other than that, nothing too fancy.

A tub of wheel bearing grease, a 2-3 hours and I'm good? Looks pretty easy, am I missing something?

Galen: Thanks for the reply. That helps me feel good about this. I'll estimate for about 3 hours, I guess. I've peeked at the ball joints. The boots have some superficial cracking, but aren't ruptured, no leaking grease... does that mean they are OK. Or at least probably OK?

Stuart: Was that an offer to help? You done this before, or just want to drink beer and supervise? I won't be going to the cruise. I'd rather get this lowering done. I'm planning on hitting up some meets/cruises later this summer though.

you'll just have to use your judgement but if the joint is nice and tight and not loose and the boots are not that bad i would say they are find but it you poke one of them while your doing all of this then you probably have to get new boots you can buy just new boots as long as the joint is nice and tight. good luck.

Thanks for your help man. That was priceless. Good times. ^^^ This guy does good work, and he moves fast! I've never met up with a real-life Samba-ite before. Great first experience. Hope to see more of you guys out at some meets/shows this summer.

This took about 4 hours, all told.... no real problems. Needed a tie-rod end remover and my impact wrench was very handy. Other than that, no real "special" tools required.
