Drove it for the first time this year! Took a few extra pictures over the last days of assembly and put them on my simple web page. The new pictures are 47-52. _________________

Took a huge step (for me at least) and crossed that point of no return.
I used ratcheting straps to draw everything together.
Have a lot of bending and shaping to do before I can start welding. _________________ 1967 Type 1 Sunroof

Drove it for the first time on the street today. Over the past weekend I finished up the brakes, new master cylinder, front wheel cylinders, brake hoses and lines, changed the oil and trans fluid. Last night rebuilt the carb and got it to idle finally. Felt good to be in a dune buggy, especially a Manx again! |

did some work on the buggy
the gas tank is ready, and in place, was cut, flip, protected, and painted, instal a new "old" electric float
the MC is in place the oil reservoir is full and the brakes are bled
instal a new "old" speedometer with the gas level on it
and finally zip tie the rats nest hazard

Started work on replacing the floor pan. I got the old one out and started preping the new one when the sky opened up. Hopefully tomorrow I can do more without the rain.

Fixed the side rail mis-match with "Pie-Cut" and used some of the extra metal from cutting the pan to repair the rusted battery tray. All spot welded in and will finish weld tomorrow.

I finally installed a hard start relay on my Kelmark today. So ridiculously easy to do that I could kick myself for having put it off for so long. When I was on a road trip in January I wired up a push button starter switch in the trunk as an emergency measure because my key switch in the column quit doing the job and I was pressed for time. It's gonna' be so nice to not have to do the dance (set the brake, put the car in neutral, hit the gas, try the ignition switch and hope it's gonna' work, find out it won't, unlatch the trunk, get out of the car, walk to the passenger side, open the trunk, reach inside and push the button, close the trunk, get back in the car, close the door ) every time I go to start the car. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

I got my emergency brake installed!! Not a bad way to spend a Saturday. No more block of wood to hold it still. Of course when I put the rear wheels back on I snapped of a lug.
I have adapters so at least it wasn't a bolt in the drum! Going to get parts tomorrow or Thursday. Grrrrr!!! I didn't even turn it that hard. It tightened up and it wasn't seated all the way, maybe a turn away, so I went to back it off and it snapped. Is this common? It is an adapter and it may be junk. I have no way of knowing, but I will fix it. _________________ Manx Club Member #4333 |

If they're the VW 4 lug to Chevy 5 lug adapters they'll twist off pretty easily (Ask me how I know! ). I think the torque for the Chevy lugs is only 55 lb. ft. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

they go from a wide 5 to 5 lug chevy pattern. Does 5 X 5.25 sound right, maybe? Anyways I'm not sure who made them but it twisted off pretty easy. Going to get extras too! _________________ Manx Club Member #4333 |

I have a set on my buggy, but I would advise you to take the new ones and put a couple of spot welds on each stud on the backside. Take the lug nuts and run them all the way down the shaft till tight and then spot weld the backs. Let em cool and you should be set and no more backing out of the studs on the adapters. I know there are some that abhor the adapters, but if you need them, this seems to be the best way to ensure that the studs dont start spinning on ya. _________________ Or you can call me………Tim

Standard Chevy pattern is 5 x 4.75". I think the lugs are 7/16". Don't know, but there might be some other Chevy pattern out there.
I've already eliminated the adapters on front of my car by switching to rotors that are drilled with the Chevy pattern. I've also got a set of rear drums that are drilled with the same pattern that I'm going to put on when I do the rear brakes and grease the rear wheel bearings. Another job that needs done... _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

Better safe than sorry. When I took the wheel back off, another one snapped. Thats two so far. I think I am going to replace them all and they are getting a spot weld on the back of each one. Also going to replace all lugs that have any resistance when its put back on. I think a thread broke inside and froze the nut on, then it just snapped. This will be a solid fix with days to go before the trip. Trying not to stress too bad. _________________ Manx Club Member #4333 |

I had to run a few errands today, and I also needed to take the hard cap off for some more cleaning and other small tid bits of items to correct/change after the ECVW trip, so, I cruised topless today.
Ran about 130 miles into Kentucky and Ohio, stopped by Hillbilly Hotdogs for lunch.
Hillbilly Hotdogs is a very unique place. It was created by a California couple who moved to West Virginia and wanted to make a go of it in the restaurant business. This was their second try. It has been featured on Dinners, Drive Inns and Dives with the funny looking blonde headed guy. When they first opened, they gathered up what junk they could for a Hillbilly look. Thay now have several buildings including a Ice Cream Parlor, "out houses", Moonshine building and thousands of antiques/junk items. Signs posted all over with hillbilly sayings. It is a tourist draw and out of the way to get to. When the first opened, they gave sharpie markers to the customers so they could sign their names to anything inside the place. Names and dates are all over everything. 10's of thousands of signatures cover everything, but no profanity. In 2008, Darlene and I came here for our first time and I signed a lamp that hangs down in the order line. It is still there today. Can you see it on the downrod of the lamp?
While cruising the back roads of WV, I spotted something glistening in the sunlight at a yard sale. Now, I never stop at yard sales, I have enough junk as it is already. But, it was gold metal flake and shiney. So, I turned around and went back for a look see. For $ 3.00 I had to buy it. My new cruising hat!
