It would be easier to change the drums to 5 wide. Cheap and easy! _________________ Mike

66 front and thing rear.
You'll need backing plates, wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware and drums. _________________ Glenn

they are held on with 3 lug bolts the 4th hole is a stud you screw into the drum and sticks out a hole in the adapter. the PO of my bug had them put on it. the PO couldnt keep the wheels and adapters tight the bolt heads was chewed up so bad that you couldnt get the adapters off and i to had replace all 4 drums. they also move your wheels outword about 1 inch and can make for probs with the tires rubbing.

Don't use adapters. Unless you check them almost every day to make sure they're tight you'll run into the chance that your wheels will fly off when you're driving. It shouldn't be too hard to find the 66/67 front drums(if you can wait til April I'm heading down to SF on a trip and have an extra pair). The Thing rear drums could be a problem, but if you're serious about going to wide 5 do it the safe way not the cheap way. _________________ Samba Whipping Boy of '07

useing adapters would be kind of like you trying to ware a pair of flip flops and a pair of boots at the sametime. yea you could do it but how long are you going to be able to walk around befor your feet hurt and you rub your toes raw.
you need to think about your safety. is it worth worrying about if and or when one of your wheels pops off? yea alot of people have used them with out any probs but it just isnt worth it in the long run. it would cost you more to fix your bug if one of the wheels was to come off or the head of the bolts get chewed so that you cant tighten or remove the adapters. do it right dont be cheap buy the right drums to do what you want to do!! _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

for the front you need 66-67 beetle
FRONT BRAKE DRUM BEETLE 66-67
BRAKE HARDWARE KIT FRONT
BRAKE SHOE SET
FRONT WHEEL CYLINDER
Backing Plate you will have to find used
for the rear 73-74 thing
REAR BRAKE DRUM THING 73-74
WHEEL CYLINDER
Brake Shoes
Hardware Kit
Backing Plate you will have to find used
thing brake shoes and hardware kit wasnt listed on cip1
hope this helps some.. i know it cost alot more then the adapters but you will have a brake job when your done and the the wheels you want will fit on your bug. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

i am not a 100% sure but i think your stock bug backing plates will work unless the drums are a different circumference or depth.
the only difference i can think of is the early backing plates dose not have the hole in them to make brake adjustments. there is a hole in the face of the drums to make the brake adjustments instead. but that shouldnt be any prob. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

Hey <FiSh(( between me and you we ought to have the answer on the rears anyway. the way to go is get type III "s . Find typeIII backing plates from any year. Then buy new wide -5 drums for type III(they will fit). Voila! you're done! When locating the typeIII rears from a junk yard, buy the whole set-up , they cost me 50$ (including tax-Glenn). That way you'll have the springs you need.
For about $225 I got new wide-5 drums, new cylinders, new shoes, vintage larger typeIII backing plates, Also the parking brake cable fits like it should. Problem solved- on the back anyway! My 2 cents |
