How does the rear bolt look and why would it be more difficult to make? |
The rear bolt is described as a "Hex standoff" to people in the hardware business. One of these-
This first secures to rear part of your shifter base. Then you place the locker base over the oem shifter base. Then you take an 8mm bolt (blanchard ground head, just like the front) and it secures into the Hex standoff _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

I just purchased a Sperrwolf lock which is pictured above however it does NOT have the 2 main bolts that hold the unit secure to the tunnel. Is it true that I can use the stock 14mm bolt to hold the rear down and that all I need is a longer 14mm bolt to hold down the front???
Are these bolts to have allen heads??? |
It is NOT true, you can't just use regular 8mmx1.25 bolts to secure that lock. The rear bolt is easier to fabricate, but some ingenuity will be required to fit the front bolt (especially if you want the locker to function)
The SperWolf bolts have 14mm socket heads, not Allens.
The front bolt has a tapered hole located on it's head. This tapered hole is where the locking pin inserts to facilitate a "locked" mode. |
I have the same Sperrwolf that will be installed on my wife's Bus - the spacer is due to the higher shifter base mount. Take a look at the rest of the pictures.

shifter lock "]Thought I'd post a few pics of my NOS Sperrwolf lock, guess it must be mid 1960's going by the info on this thread and the illustrations of VW's on the instruction leaflet.......
Its never been used, but am a bit puzzled by the seemingly Type 2 part number on the box ; 211 016 051 can anyone shed any light on this? Does this mean it could be fitted to a Type 2?
Lastly, having owned this for about 12 years now I don't really know what its worth (not that I'd sell it! ), can anyone give me an idea please?
Thanks!
[/quote] I have one just like this that came in my 58 right hand drivedrive bug, a guy at the classic told me they are worth about 600.00-750.00 if complete and working like mine ... _________________ ALWAYS HOLDING IT DOWN IN EL PASO TEXAS... |

Because your shifter lock comes with the Aluminum spacer that sits below the base of the shifter, it can be used for a Type 2. If fitting to a Beetle or Ghia, DO NOT install the spacer. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

I got the same Sperrwolf lock as Louie Macias shows.
I can add that it is mentioned in vw's own sparepart catalogue with the same no 211 016 051, but the picture does show an older version.
But it is shown with the rubber part
I've used the Sperrwolf lock in my 65' bus for several years and it's been working fine.
But i never had the original aluminium spacer, so i just used the cheap 'short shifter' version.
As i am in process of fine tuning my gear selection, could anyone with the original spacer please give us the height of it
Best regards
Ronnie

Question on this one. It is marked BKS and it is the older toilet bowl style. It came out of a 58 bug apparently. Original key. This should be a good fit in my 56 i hope. Any comments on the 56 fit and what is the deal with BKS? _________________ "Thanks to you I'm much obliged, such a pleasant stay" RP

I've just dug out the Sperrwolf from my box of goodies and measured the height of the spacer using a digital caliper, I obtained several readings, varying between 13.06mm and 13.1mm ...
Hope that helps Ronnie...

Thanks !

Hello
Now i have made a few measurements, and it seems like i have to grind a bit on my taiwan spacer.
Pictures:
As you can see the spacer is a bit thicker than the 13.1mm, more like 19mm
The bottom of the gearlock , seems to be 49.5mm
Here they are combined. As i calculate it the correct height should be
49.5mm + 13.1mm = 62.6mm.
But as you can see..it is 66mm
So i need to clear 3.4mm _________________ 65' Doubledoor

Has anybody got any idea where I could buy one correct for a 57 Oval?
Is it possible to buy the spacer?
Thanks

Maybe that guy from Singapore Tony has one, he have adds on thesamba now and then.
Otherwise Ebay or here.
Its important it's all there..unless you just want is as a dummy item.
Regarding the spacer;
It worked fine for me to grind af bit of my taiwan spacer, you could also have one made local..(like we all know someone, who working with metal)
Its a nice touch for any bug or bus etc..people thinks it is automatic gear.

Just trying to get access to the scans of the Sperrwolf instructions use for the ignition/shifter lock combo got type 1...
The link posted earlier in this thread no longer works. Can anyone provide a working link, upload, or email me a copy of the instructions/installation manual?

Regards & thanks!
