I posted my 3-spoke BD steering wheel with sun and moon as my favorite accessory, but this one comes in a close second. (it might have been first if I had it currently installed on a car.)
it is called a klinometer or an inclinometer. I saw one on some odd european website that had some rare accessories, and I was able to track down a couple of them on ebay germany a few years ago. these are really hard to find. (I sold my spare to David Mayes a couple years ago)
it measures your accelleration/decelleration in both meters per second squared and % of a G-force. thus, this gauge shows how bad ass your car is on the street. it is sheer fun watching it to see how fast you are accellerating. my '63 deluxe bus would accellerate ay .2 Gs in 1st, .15 in 2nd, .1 in 3rd and .05 in 4th.
I really need to get a '58 sunroof beetle to install my okrasa engine into to see what it will do.
with as cool and fun as this accessory is, I have never seen or heard of another one on a VW, or in any VW collectors stash (other than the one I sold David) it is not a VW specific accessory, rather it is something that can fit any car.

my opinion? foxcraft skirts do not belong on a vw beetle. they do look good on a 49-51 mercury tho' in the mid 60's (august 1965) and on we-vw beetle drivers- did not put this "over" accesoried crap on our rides. they were basic,stripped down daily drivers. i never saw a wood slat roof rack until the late 90's. my rack purchased in 67 from vw dealer was metal tubing.

and did someone request your opinion? just kidding, I agree with you on this. my research shows wood slat racks to be a 50s item while metal tube racks were a 60s item. accessory catalogs confirm this fairly well. taller metal tubing racks for sunroof beetles easily date them to the early 60s.
what gets me is that many people out there have no problem taking apart four cool cars that were accessorized back in the day to create one over-accessorized car that never was. or to just collect parts and plan on creating one that never was.
there were some ultra-pimped rides from back in the day, and I have period photos to prove it, but in my experience finding original cars, it was very unusual for a beetle to have more than a dozen accessories.

of course I am as guilty as many when it comes to putting lots of accessories on cars, but I try to limit it, as to preserve some cars in their original state and make others more exciting with a couple dozen rare accessories. the only accessories that my early westies get are period camping accessories that don't bolt onto the bus. my standard microbuses get plenty of accessory items though. I have so damn many beetle accessories that keep falling into my collection that I really need to get a sunroof beetle to hang them all on.

| The accessory I use the most is the simple fold down visor for the rear view mirror for night driving but steel chrome 5-lug Sprint Stars are good. |

Your opinion? Mr. Fat Chick. Who cares? JK You have your opinion, but Foxcrafts are very popular on early cars in Europe. In fact, I bought my first set at Bad Camberg many years ago. Some of the most accessorized cars are European Splits........there they weren't just basic transportation.....they were a source of pride of ownership and the accessories were a way to personalize and add an element of "class" to a simple car. It took me awhile before I decided to put Foxcrafts on my oval, but I've never wanted to take them off again. They sort of have to "grow on" you. They are "cancer" to Europeans.
