|
|
We have a set of 4 vintage suitcases made for vw.
Label inside of suitcases state: "Bredesens Polar Grand Prix - Paris 1937"
This is not the year the cases were made....but when the company was founded.
Any info., comments or general sightings of similar sets appreciated

In some VW publicity material these suitcases look like the type that fit perfectly: the two small ones go in the front compartment, and the two larger ones go behind the back seat. But it's true, they couldn't be made for VW if they are dated 1937. The sedan wasn't officially introduced until the 1939 Berlin Auto Show. |

Those are one of a couple different case combinations made for VW. The date tag of 1937 is in reference to the company's founding date not the year the cases were made. I have owned two sets of those and neither was complete like yours. Usually the larger two cases are all you find. I saw two for sale at the recent Porsche/VW show from a well know European dealer and they were quite expensive. Congratulations on a great find. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Bonafide originals, a 4 piece set is indeed rare, nice to see them.

"Rest Assured", 53 Oval knows how to spell, and he knows grammar and syntax reasonably well, as well.
Great find, wonderful score...as has been already said, finding the complete set of 4 is pretty uncommon, even (dare I say it) "rare".. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

notice how the finish is different on the big ones versus the small ones. UV light is you enemy. I had some vintage luggage in the back of my old oval, and it went to crap in the light. _________________ .

"Vulcanfiber" (basically low cost heavy duty cardboard fiber) is what they used to make these suitcases, and they printe on various color/textures, fades really quick, and scratches up even easier. For that reason I have mint 3 piece set carefully roped off in a dark room at my house for that reason, they only go in for a show, and never ever on a roof rack, they are actually a rather big an awkward accessory to take care of.
Finding these wouldn't of been easy on Ebay as you think, sure you can search under "Volkswagon" as the keyword, but there are 3700 listings under that, 10+ pages to scan through, and in this really rare circumstance it was worth it, and you'd have to spend alot of late nights trying to catch things like this. There were no other keywords in that listing, like "rare" or "oval" or "split", or "accessory" to help find them, which explains why the list of bidders don't even look the least bit familiar.
The best hunting is on Ebay Europe, only you need to learn a little German, and some slang, and variations on terminology, and many folks don't post gallery pictures to save the .35 if you can believe that, found many treasures that way.

when I used to buy a lot of stuff on ebay, I would sometimes find a really poorly listed item. it was always crazy when my bid would be five times the ending price. _________________ .

The way to search is like this: volks* The star gives you the wildcard so no matter if it is "volkswagen" or "volkswagon" or any other variant of "volks..." you will get the hit....but there are even craftier ways of finding misplaced VW items. Can't give away all the secrets in one post. |
