Probably the easiest way to tell is the name "Robri" itself. It has to be a clear, clean stamp........as opposed to the non distince name on the repros. If every letter is sharp and distince then you have a real one. The originals are also not aluminum but a pewter based alloy. The OG one actually have "yellow" sub tone almost a nickle cast to them. The repros are cast and marketed by the original family who produced them 'back in the day." Another way to know is the OG ones are very expensive and quite rare. The odds of you finding a set without buying the car they are on is next to impossible. I run the repros on my rear fenders because I had to trim them down to get them to line up with the Foxcrafts. With those I had to work the name over until I was happy with it. I could not bring myself to trim down an OG set. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Don't even the originals require a scary amount of grinding, filing, sanding and all to make them fit? |

No......not if you have original fenders and original Robris. Some people run a beading around the outside edge to seal them up but, by and large they fit pretty well. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

The BBT ones are really nice. Mine say ROBRI, the Flat 4 ones do not.

I tried to use that BBT link and its dead. Then I went to bbt-us.com and it said that they had closed their online us retail store. Then I went to CIP1.com because I know that I had seen them for sale there and read this.
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C21%2D0431
"We have just received these Genuine Robri 5 piece gravel guard sets. This is not the Flat-4 version which is made in China. We are the exclusive distributor of this very authentic vintage accessory. The Robri brand of accessories was a very popular line made in Belgium back in the 50-60's. This company has been out of business for year. Our European supplier has found the original tooling and has had them re-trimmed and adjust to reproduce this very cool set of gravel guards. These are just like the originals, made of 98% pure pewter and are made to match the original German fenders. They can be used on the aftermarket replacement fenders, but you will need to adjust the gravel guards (bent) to fit the fenders properly. This is easily done as the pewter material is flexible. Fits all years of Beetle. Includes 2 front fender guards, 2 rear fender guards and 1 driver side running board mud and snow scraper."
So I guess they do make the repops out of pewter after all. _________________ 69 Beetle Autostick DD

I would say yes as the BBT ones that I have are made out of pewter. I can't believe there are a lot of folks repoping them. They are nice and heavy, you should like them. |
