|
|
So, I get the phone call. My wife was upset. She explains that she was cleaning the stove with a new product her friend recommended. She said she sprayed it on the stove, and phone rang. She went to get the phone and forgot the stove for about 10 minutes. When she came back a good portion of the top of the stove was stripped down to bare metal. Here is the culprit:
DAWN POWER DISSOLVER
So since I am not home. Would anyone care to try it out on a car panel and report back to us? Might be a good inexpensive paint stripper. _________________ The honey-do list put my project on hold....... |

Jowlz, aren't most stovetops enameled? If it eats thru that type of coating, I'll give it a try on my oval. There's several layers of paint including the last one applied w/ a paint brush. Thx for the tip _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |

I'll go find some and try it on my neighbor's car.
Kidding.
I am interested though, it's always nice to find a new paint stripper. |

Some oven cleaners are strong enough to remove paint and skin. |

Yep,
I normally use Dow Corning Maximum Strength "Easy-Off" Oven Cleaner on all my grimy parts before finish cleaning by hand. I once sprayed it on a tranny that was still in the car and got some on the underside of the rear luggage area... Let it sit for 15 minutes on a hot day and when I powerwashed it all off... The paint came off too! Luckky I was media blasting shortly after that.
Even "Safe" oven cleaner isn't really safe so be careful and it helps for it to be a hot day to work best.... |

How many layers of paint are on that poor thing?
And was that blue the original? _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

I don't think my elbow has that much grease left in it.
I'll stick to media blasting,
thanks for the before and after photos. |

Just the one coat of firebus red over the OG dove blue, over 50 years had fried the red with UV so I cant say it was anywhere near as bad as some guys that have 5 layers brushed on.
I used a similar oven cleaner which hardly touched the OG paint, if you guy are interested search the splitbus forums, getting back to the Og paint has been the subject of several long threads.

Yesterday visited three Shop&Shops and two Shaws all to no avail.
Found some today at Home Depot.
(my wife mentioned they sell heavy duty cleaner - it wouldn't have occurred to me to look there).
Sprayed it on an old fender about 10 minutes ago.
It goes on fluid, but ends up snotty and sticks to vertical surfaces. It does not smell very much.
It seems to be doing something because the top layer came right off after I touched the snotty mess with a painters knife.
Will post pictures when I check it in the morning. (may not get around to checking tonight)
If this stuff works, it is quite a find at $3 a bottle.
We'll all have to chip in for some Sees Candies or something to thank your wife, Jowls. |

Good news! This stuff actually works very well!!
Jowlz, with your permission, I'd like to send your wife a box of candies because she has saved us a lot of time and money. If it is ok with you, please PM me your address.
I spritzed some on the end of a fender that had been repainted. I let it sit for about four hours and the paint is practically falling off! I can't tell if it is down to the primer or the OG paint but this stuff will spare me a lot of time. It also does not seem to smell very much, but I'd imagine you'll still want to be careful. I'll take some to work tomorrow to see what's in this stuff (we make atomic analyzers) to make sure it isn't something horrible.
Here are some pictures:
Get this stuff!! Home Depot for less than $3.00!!
Untouched.
Spritzed and sitting in a pan.
Stuff coming right off.
The blue/grey may be the OG color or primer - can't tell yet.
For my next test, I wrapped cellophane around the fender to see if this helps speed or cleans it even better. (I strip furniture this way and it helps - it would be great if it worked here too)
Edited to add:
This morning the paint practically fell off, right with the cellophane. It did not attack the cellophane at all. It is still moist so probably still active so clearly that amplifies the stripping power.
Just lightly running my scraper over the fender, I see bare metal. Suspect that with a little steel wool (and thick gloves) I can get it all bare in a matter of minutes.
This stuff definitely works.. |

Just one brainfart and posted it here to make sure you read it:
This stuff just works a little too well for me to not worry about it.
I don't know what is in this stuff yet. It does not smell any worse than Windex but that doesn't mean it isn't nasty stuff and can be dangerous.
Will try to get it analyzed over the next couple of days just to make sure this is not something super toxic or emits really bad gases.
If you do want to try it treat it with caution as you should any chemical. Open air, gloves and goggles are all good ideas. |
