when you use this, can you spray a rag then wipe it over a larger surface of paint? or is it just a spray on wipe off sorta thing _________________ 1991 GLI 16v 09-10

I gave this a shot on my 74 Baja bug this weekend. I went down to wal mart and bought what was their medium-priced aerosol oven cleaner. My bug still has most of its original paint, with several layers of crappy jobs on top.... I sprayed down the entire thing with 3 and a half cans and let it sit for about 3 hours. After that, the paint came off incredibly easy with a simple power-washer. I couldn't have asked for better results.

It seems to work best of you let it soak for awhile. |
Right. That's why you use the plastic wrap to hold the moisture in so it doesn't dry out as quickly.
That's an old woodworker trick.
Well, maybe not "old" but it certainly has been around since we've had stripper and plastic wrap. |

Found some at walmart for 1.98 per bottle. ACE has it too. They sell it by the case, $30 for 10 bottles. you can buy it online and have it shipped, i believe.
Here is my test on my steering wheel lock. I painted it red with a rattle can thinking it would look cool but no dice so i needed to strip it.
there are multiple layers of paint on the peice. red, flat black, primer, white, turquoise blue, off white, and the original paint color with i think was birch green. the Dawn ate thru it all down to the metal.
SPRAYED THE DAWN ON
COVERED IT PLASTIC WRAP AND LET IT SIT OVER NIGHT, ABOUT 8 HRS.
TOOK A GARDEN HOSE TO IT WITH A PRESSURE ATTACHMENT ON IT.
95% OF THE PAINT PEELED RIGHT OFF WITH JUST THE WATER PRESSURE. THE REST CAN BE SCRAPED OFF WITH A THUMB NAIL OR TOOTHPICK.

For a small section I used Carbona Oven Cleaner and steel wool. Worked well because it's biodegrabale, has no fumes and is sprayed as a gel so it didn't run on vertical surfaces. I used it with steel wool over original stencilling because I didn't want to use anything too strong that would harm the lettering underneath. |

Got mine at WalMart. It also does a nice job on my stove top (but I did carefully test it on a hidden area first!) _________________ 1974 Convertible SunBug named Miss Bea (by my daughter).

For people asking about paint, I would definitely not just paint over anything I just put chemicals on unless it specifically said that you can. Anything I'm unsure about, I'd hit with soapy water, heat gun it dry, and take some sand paper to it. |

gonna give this a try this weekend for the air ducts above the engine to see how it goes, cause sanding in there is damn near impossible.... _________________ Joe

It wont touch bondo. The active ingredient is these oven cleaners, simple green, soap is Sodium Hydroxide. It does not affect plastics. Mixed very strong it will eat metals over time. The common name is Lye. In the old days people used it as pipe cleaners for the sewer drains. Over time it ate away at the old cast iron pipe. Todays plastic drain pipes it is fine for. It also has to be pretty strong to eat metal.
I have been building scale models for years and we use it to strip paint off of models.
You can buy it from places that sell home soap making products and mix as strong as you like. It is dangerous in high concentration and you have to add the powder to water, not the opposite. It has a property called volcanism if mixed wrong and it can cause problems. BOOM.
It does not work on all paints but quite a few it will. It also strips paint off of metal better than plastic due to its reaction with metal. It does need some chipped edges for that method to work though. |

if you heat the backside of the panel with a torch the bondo will scrape right off with a putty knife. just dont get the torch to close or hold it on the metal for long periods or the panel will warp. It makes quick work of plastic filler |

Well I don't want to remove the bondo but I used rattle can primer when I was done with the bondo and I want to remove the rattle can primer from the bondo. |

So I used it yesterday...I found it at my local Walmart..... sprayed on the vents and left for a few hours I didn't cover it at all like other guys did just cause I was in a bit of a hurry but when I got back to it, the old paint had lifted and came off completely. Pretty damn good stuff for sure.... it took off the cheap dark blue paint that the PO had sprayed it. It didn't lift the original paint which I'm okay with but with a little screwdriver and my thumb on the end of water hose everything came off and I'm gonna spray primer tonight and see how it sticks....I will take picks as I go.... _________________ Joe

This is a fascinating thread. Although a little old. Has anyone found anything better? Are they still selling this stuff? What's the cheapest place that carries it?
Much thanks. This stuff sounds great!
EDIT - Holy shit. This stuff is $9.37 a bottle now! What happened?
