|
|
There are two ads in the classifieds for '67 riew view mirrors. One has an aluminum body and the other has a plastic body.
Which is correct or was there a change as the year progressed?

My early 67 has an aluminum body, offset like the one in the top picture. However it has the more "sculpted" looking (can't think of a better term) base/neck that is depicted in the second picture.
I have never seen a 67 with a plastic mirror but that doesn't mean they didn't use them later, as 67 is definitely a transition year.
Here is a picture of mine, after my daughter and I finished repairing the pivot and installing new glass in it. I don't believe I had polished it at this point.

My 67 has a plastic one.
The screwheads are in good condition. No way to know if it is original though..

what I heard was that at some time in the late '60s/early 70's, the US DOT required that mirror backs be made of a non-reflective material. so NOS replacement mirrors after that point were made with black plastic backs.
all original split bus rearview mirrors had aluminum backs. _________________ .

My '67 (Dec. '66) has a plastic back, which I believe to be original to the vehicle.

I'll agree with lind on this one. I just sold one with a plastic back, sold it as a 67. Here is the VW part# & FAM stamp that was on it.

That's odd. I can't confirm that mine was original to the bus, but I have a pretty good feeling that it was; and it had a metal back on it. My bus was produced the same day as yours... _________________ -Andrew |

I guess the mirror was replaced at some point then. You learn something new everyday. |

I'm wondering if it was a dealer thing, some got metal & others got plastic. _________________ Hoockd on fonicks werkt for mee?

Really interesting! My girlfriend's '67 Squareback came with a plastic backed rear view mirror. It is original and of course one year only.
My June 7th, 67's mirror is plastic. It looks very original and fairly well preserved since the bus is a Portland, Oregon bus. I haven't pulled it off to check it to see if it has a VW number and stamp.
Lind, thanks for that info on the regulation for a non-reflective material. _________________ Jerry

I thought I read somewhere that commercials didn't get shipped with interior mirrors? Or was it just the exterior mirrors? If so, would dealers have been using up their stocks? |

prior to 1964, only deluxes had rearview mirrors from the factory. most buses had rearview mirrors installed at some point though.
sideview mirrors and hubcaps were shipped inside the vehicles and installed at the dealership as to avoid damage or loss during shipping. _________________ .

This is the classified ad that prompted this question.

I will try and pull mine today and see if there is a VW part number. _________________ Jerry

Another question that comes to mind is:
When did the mirrors become offset? The earlier mirrors had the pivot point in the middle but at some point it was moved toward the passenger's side. _________________ Jerry
