I have done my last 4 Buses with Bay tanks. I love extra driving distance. The fuel total at the pump does suck though.

Well, I dont think it matters how big the tank is. Your bus will use the same amount of fuel reguardless of the size of the tank. You just fill up less often. I have the bay tank and like it. I also have a locking gas cap. I fabbed the filler neck to use a chevelle cap.

$30? You must be running 87. I have been running 91. It is $40 to fill it up. Still better that the $100 in my Duramax Chevy.

87 is more than required octane for 1600 SP with 30pict-1 carb in a 65 overloaded camper panel.

Does anyone have a solution to stabilize the fuel gauge when using a late bay "toilet bowl" sender?

close your eyes and dont look. Surprised Yes I did the toilet bowl bay sending unit deal. I didnt like it as it drove me nuts even though I already am. Swapped baytank out for a 68 to 71 tank that took the same style fuel sender but baywindow ...........a little longer than the split fuel sender. I purchased the 68 to 71 fuel sender out of the classifieds, fixed it, installed it and love it. Sending unit works just as well as the shorter split one in split tank. I did try to futz around with capacitors ect to smooth out the jumpyness.........it worked some, but not as smooth as just using the can float style split or early bay unit. Youd pretty much have to build yourself an integrator or custom circuit to get it to work flawlessly.

You must use a standardized sender. IE, one of these:
http://www.egauges.com/vdo_send.asp?Sender=VDO_Adjustable
Splitbus fuel gauges operate on 90 to zero ohms resistance. Bay fuel gauges operate on something completely different. A splitbus fuel gauge will not be even remotely accurate on a Bay sending unit.

Curious if anyone has used the bay tank vent pipe and hose? I am doing this swap out presently, and I do not see any reason not to use the venting of the Bay tank.
Well, I am going to try it out. Wink

I have my bay tank vented. I do second guess it every once in a while because it stinks up my garage. I will need to figure out a charcoal stopper for the end.

It's difficult to get a full tank at the gas pump when you don't vent the top of a bay tank. I run the stock '68 bay vent tube and just route it to the filler neck so when the air in the tank rises to the top of the tank as it gets displaced by the incoming fuel it just flows back to the open filler. Otherwise, the air gets trapped in the top of the tank and you have to rock the bus side-2-side to burp the air out the filler neck. Here's a picture.

Where are you guys getting the rubber sleeve for the filler tube? Or are you just using the bay set up?

I just went and bought some at O'Reilly's. I bought a 4' length being that is how it comes though they would have cut it for me. I figured it didn't hurt to have some extra. It cost me $50. ID was 2 1/4".

I looked at my Bay and the vent hose goes into the cap area, but it is closed off from the engine compartment, unlike the Split. I am going to run it into the bit of metal that is to the rear of the gas cap.

Trying to decide whether to use the Bay or Split end of the pipe and cap.

Kevin, what about running it thru a Bay Charcoal canister somewhere above the right rear fender well.....there seems to be enough room to mount one?

Yeah, that sounds like an idea. I did not know where to get one. I was gonna start scoping out pet stores' aquarium sections. I like the Bay filler neck that pipes it back in, but that kinda defeats the idea of venting the tank, doesn't it?

Here is my install on my '58 panel. I knocked a little dent into the tank so I wouldn't have to cut the trans tunnel.

I had the added benifit of a hole cut into the top of the engine bay. So that made room for the top hump to clear going over the trans tunnel. Also, the '58 had no gas guage, just the reserve petcock and cable accuater. I put in a stock tank sender and will find an aftermarket guage to mount under the dash.
