Make sure your odometer records mileage correctly. My current Thing registers 1 mile for every 1.25 miles driven, thus making my MPG seem like 20 when it is actually 25. On my first Thing (back in 1980) the odometer only registered about half of the miles, so I thought I was getting 13 MPG when I was getting much more.
Find a measured mile (or measure one with another vehicle), compare, and redo the math.

A GPS is also handy for checking the odometer. |

Good Idea with the Gps and clocking with another car I will do that right away. Howerver I drive the same distance every week and it just seems to have poor milage. I have dueller 205/75 15 radials but that shouldn't reduce it that much .
What is the average mpg I'm should expect? |

maybe it’s the gas that’s so expensive!!!! mixed with ethanol...This should be real interesting when they start phasing out MTBE for ethanol. I wonder if thats it. With that mileage at 9mpg I will run to NYC tomorrow burn the tank and pick up some new fuel and maybe octane boost. |

son-of-a bi... I am shy 2.5 tenths of a mile....on the volks... At 67 miles and 5.7 gallons of gas what is the MPG with the offset.. Why is there a offset? and can it be fixed. Thats 14.6 mpg not great .
I will clean the air filters and take a good run tomorrow.

Tires probably threw it off, and possibly the rear end gears are not stock.
A good speedometer shop can fix it for you. They have a adjustable box they can place in line, or they may recalibrate the speedo head. Talk to them. |

I measured a mile down the highway and at 60 exactly on my speedo it took me 1 minute and 6 seconds to make that 5,280 feet - meaning it registers 10% under. I have smaller tires on my bug but nonetheless anything but stock size will throw that off along with the odometer. _________________ 1967 Zenith Blue Type 1 "Elaine"

thats interesting about the gears.Running into similair problem with a 57 pickup.with 4:11's need to bring it down to 3:08's That could be why I can't get over 80 mph. I seem to cap at 70-75 on the Thing but the numbers all match I do have a spare tranny and cv's If this is the issue what would be the right gears for the Thing? |

OOOOOP's I was thinking old Volvo's. I forgot the rear end ratio will not be involved with air cooled VW's. The speedo cable operates off the front left tire. |

Hey z-volks, how's Westport these days? I grew up & lived just across the border in Easton, back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. I miss it sometimes, but Northern California reminds me of what CT was like in the summers when I was a kid.
Anyway, re: mileage - that seems unusually low. The tires you have shouldn't impact it to that extent. Transmission/drivetrain factors could certainly be a big part of it, but the first question that comes to mind is: how do you normally drive your Thing? You mention that you can't get her over 80 (and that she caps out between 70-75) - these are really high speeds for a Thing. I think the original Road and Track top speed rating for a brand new stock Thing capped out at 73mph.
Also, where you're driving your Thing will have a big impact on fuel efficiency. If you're trying to keep up with traffic on the Merit, with all of it's hills and curves (as opposed to the relatively flat I-95), your mileage will definitely suffer.
At what RPM (or speed, if you don't have a tach) are you shifting? |

Take it to shop and have them put it on CO / HO analyzer and see if your burning the fuel or puffing it out the pipe. CO should be about 6-4% I was told--decreases with RPM increase. The VW aircooled engine will run very fat before you will notice a problem bad problem.
I also had a VW getting pressure to the tank somehow and It blew fuel from a loose fitting gas cap when full. I disabled the whole charcoal filtering setup and it was OK. Is your cap sealing good?
If you can make it go 80 your not stock. |

Mine with stock setups were 22mpg and 25mpg respectively.
