I have been looking at a craftsman compressor it has a 25 gal tank and delivers 7.4 scfm @ 40psi, my main use for this would be a hvlp gun which requiers 6.5 scfm @ 40psi so my question is does the 7.4 scfm (compessor) mean that is what the engine can produce or does it mean what a full tank of air can deliver? basically I know that the compessor will have to work fairlly hard to keep up with the gun but that is not a huge concern as I would be able to get the compressor for really cheap and it would still be under warrenty when I paint. I would love to get a bigger compressor but it just isnt in the budget right now. any advice would be greatly appriciated. Thanks

That is what the compressor can produce while running.

any of them will do in a pinch , but if you are going to be running
paint/da and long boards w/ them it will run all the time, and you will
will have to let it catch up. twin is the way to go.
If it is a cash flow thing, then get it as a starter and up grade
when you can.

Good luck!

Ours weighed a lot. We had to take the motor and compressor off the tank just to take it down from our truck.

Well, with the help of my friend John, and 3 sawhorses, we tilted it down onto the sawhorses. From there we slid if forward onto them, and walked it into the garage. A real pain in the ass, but a great compressor.

Just picked up a 5hp 60 gal compressor. But its 3 phase and I need to replace the motor with a single phase. Anyone know a good place to buy a 5hp electric motor. Its a 182T frame 60 hz 3450 rpm motor. Hoping I can find something reasonable.

Finally, I am ready to purchase "my own" Air Compressor. I'm somewhat familiar to them and have been borrowing my buddy's (Campbell Hausfeld Horizontal roll around compressor for small tools) and I have used them in my buddy's shops as well. I have never bought one myself and want to be sure I am on the right track. I'll be setting this up in my own 900sqft garage.

I will be using the following tools:
Impact Gun
Grinders/Sanders (or I might just use an electric sander)
Wheels
Spray Guns (with moisture filters)
and other tools, I'm sure!

I know it's all about what the tools requires (CFM requirements). I want to find an affordable Air Compressor that won't limit my use. This will be for my own garage/shop. I still consider myself a rookie (because I am still learning but shouldn't we all be learning everyday). I don't want to break the bank. I want something that I will use for many years to come. Eventually this will be my profession.

My lovely fiance found a compressor for me at our local Lowe's but I am not sure if this is the way to go. Here are the details:

First
KOBOLT 60 Gallons Wertical Cast iron Compressor (Lowe's own brand)
13.4 SCFM @ 40 PSI
11.5 SCFM @ 90 PSI
155 PSI Max
Single Stage
3.7 HP
208-240 Volts / 15 AMPs
Auto Start/Stop operation
3 year limited Warranty with option for an extended Warranty
Assembled in the USA

Was $438
Now $399 plus a $100 gift card (so really $299)

They also have at Lowes:

Second
KOBOLT 80 Gallon Hi Flo Cast Iron
16.1 SCFM @ 40 PSI
14.0 SCFM @ 90 PSI

3 year limited warranty

Price: $799
Here's the link: http://www.lowes.com/pd_221580-14989-LLA4508065_42...087_?No=15

Third
Also at Lowes is the Campbell Hausfeld 80-Gallon Air Compressor
Very similar to the KOBOLT.

Not sure to go with an 80 or 60 Gallon. How do these sound to you or if you have any recommendations? I want to spend my money wisely because I view this as an investment for future jobs. I greatly appreciate it!

Should I be looking at 2 stage compressors? I just can't spend $1500 and up Sad

Thanks you

Yes, I am quoting myself. I did my own research and spoke to the Ladies and Gentlemen at Belaire Air, IMC, Abac Air, Atlas COPCO (probably the best air compressor U.S. company in the business). These folks are the experts when it comes to air compressors. They are super friendly and have great customer service! They make the best in the industry for commercial use. And they all said the same thing, go with:

at least an 80 Gallons
2 stage
no less than 20 CFM
single phase (of course)
no lower than a 7.5 HP (ideally a 10 HP but then you have to go to a 3 phase electric).
And make sure you get a "FULL 2 Year" bumper to bumper Warranty!
You want lots of air so you are not limited on your tools down the road!
Also, a unit that comes ready to go, like their units. Attach electric and go! (just keep up on the maintenance of course).

You want a machine that will keep up with your tools for a long time and no limitations. You do not want to go and purchase a larger machine in the near future.

They said to be careful with the so called "2 year extended warranties". These warranties are just for 1 year (motor only but not the "Valves or pistons"). If you get the extended 1 year kit, all that is is just "oil" for the unit and extends your 1 year to 2 year but remember, it is not a full warranty (Only warranties certain parts of the motor, not the "valves or pistons")

Oh and I called Northern Tools and their customer service sucks! All they try to do is sell you the best thing they carry (of course). I told them that I was looking for a compressor for my garage with a 220. And they kept trying to convince me to buy the $2000 Ingersoll Rand 3 Phase electric compressor. Go figure Rolling Eyes

If you need more information, please PM me. There are other great things and secrets that I found out about air compressors and the air compressors being sold out there.

I'm sick of my 60 gallon compressor. I'm going to pull the trigger on a good 80 gallon. Anyone have a good spot to get one in the Portland OR area? I don't want a wussy 5HP motor on my 80 gallon either..... Please advise.

Two stage compressors, and oiled compressors are the quietest.

Try to avoid oilless compressors.

I have aquired a old T30 MDL # 234 compressor (free!) and horzontal tank. This compressor (pump only) appears to be almost identical to the current model. I'm guessing it could be a 70's vintage. It has a 3 ph. motor that I will swap out...Just wondering if anyone has experience with a T30 this old?

Thanks!

I'm real close to pulling the trigger Fuzz VW's #3 (Campbell Hausfeld 80-Gallon Air Compressor) which boasts a 16.1 CFM @ 90psi You can't beat the price of $799.00 and from what I've read the typical HVLP gun requires about 12cfm. Also this bad boy has a 3year "limited" warranty. Not bad in my opinion. I think the price is right and it will be a great investment in my projects. I want to buy it right the first time, not find out in the end that it doesn't have enough power to do what I need. Oh yeah and it uses oil.

heh OK!! So.. I picked up one of these to spray down some minor parts for my Beetle and to clean up some of the minor problems on my fast back...

http://www.eastwood.com/soda-blasting/soda-blasters/dual-tank-blaster.html

NOW... this thing is amazing.. BUT I have one small problem with it.. finding an Air Compressor that will do..

6cfm 90psi am I crazy or misreading the air compressors labels.. is this a fairly common sized air compressor that I can pick up here in Alberta?? If anyone can help me track something down I'd be HUGELY thankful..

Appreciate it..

Last summer I did tons of research and settled on a 30gal 2hp Husky (Campbell Hausfeld) from Home Depot. I know many of you would insist that I absolutely need an 80gal with more horsepower than the car itself, but I've been content so far. Sure, I've got to wait for it to catch up when I'm grinding, but I'm a slow worker anyway. And I'm space-limited so it fits nicely into the corner. Solid and fairly quiet, too. No complaints.

But I haven't tried painting yet. The nominal output for this unit is 6.5cfm at 40psi. I do know that some HVLP guns (like the ones at HD) theoretically claim to work with those numbers. But I'm concerned about quality issues, though maybe those are fine. Any thoughts?

Also, I'm currently running it on 120v, but it's dual voltage. Dumb question: what is the benefit to switching it to run 240v?

Preesh!
