Here's some pictures with my template. I took the template pic with a long zoom, so it should be pretty "flat" and you can just print it and take measurements. I will see if I can find the acrylic. Nancy, do you still need one??

after reading this topic I'm getting bit confused about that little lense inside you talking about...some shops selling red and clear pope nose lenses (the big outer lenses I mean). My 51' has 2 bulps and it actually make perfect sense to have the little red lense inside for the brake bulp, but if I buy the red outer glas then it'll be always red light when I turn on the lights, does anybody know the differences? European style maybe? |

Thanks John. That that clears up the both ends. I can easily trim the ends on my template with the help of your picture now.
I'd say that they all should have a clear outer lens and a red inner brake light lens. Atleast my -52 have just had a clear one. There was no red lens when I bought the popesnose but it do have both the parking light bulb and the brake light bulb in it. _________________ ~Kris~

Yes John I do still need one.
I'm having a time chasing a electrical gremlin right now (discussed in a different post) so I'd welcome a different activity |

so the red outer lense could be wrong, in any case it doesn't make sense |

I've never seen a red out lens, that makes no sense... _________________ John Henry

I used to make them years ago Nancy but stopped when I cut back and stopped making the low dollar stuff. Let me look and see if I still have the tooling. I do know that I bought a huge sheet of acrylic and have plenty left. I cut the flat shape with patter and a bandsaw, immerse what amounts to a bent coffee can into a pot of boiling water, then use tongs to lower it in and form it around the can. It was trial and error and I had to tweak it by softening areas again by dipping them in the boiling water, bending then dunking in cool water. I was proud that I figured out how to make them, but it was basically a PIA (the water had to be really boiling hard to work right) to make a $35 part, so I quit doing it. By test fitting each piece into a popes nose though, I could tweak and get a real nice, even fit. The pic above is mine.
I wouldn't mind making another few if you can't find anything. I have seen "NOS" ones a few times, but they are brittle and the color is usually faded. |
If you do consider making another batch of them I will commit to buying 2 or 3 of them in red. I just replaced one in my standard with an amber one that was included with a bunch of parts that came with the car. I'd rather have a red one though.
Not in any rush though. |

Well, I am committed, I went to Lowes and bought a band saw today. I used to use one in a mechanical shop at work that has since closed down and all the tool removed. I will Make a run of 6 or so and put them in the classifieds when done, and I will post in this thread... _________________ John Henry

I found what appears to be an original piece in the box of parts that came with my 1951 Karmann. I assume this part was an addition to US export vehicles, as it is not listed in my 1951 factory parts manual.
