|
|
Hello there. I have just installed a VW factory built (mexi) 1600 into my 71 bus. I put empi 34 dual carbs on it and was trying to sync them tonight. I noticed that the 3&4 cylinder side is running hotter/ warming up much quicker than the 1&2 side. I know this is fairly normal. My concern is that the carburator on the 1&2 side does very little when I adjust it liberally where as the 3&4 side carb is fairly touchy. It seems to be the case with the idle adjustment as well as idle air setting. The carb on 1&2 side seems to be sucking less air and that side is running cooler than the other 3&4 side. I got the carbs to read the same on the flow meter. When I rev it up it still pops pretty loudly.
I am thinking about adjusting my valves again tomorrow. I adjusted them on the bench and they were perfect (if a little bit tight)... I am hearing a bit more rocker arm "Ticky Ticky" on the 3/4 side, but that has been normal in my experience so far.
Can anyone give me some advice on evening things out? _________________ 83 Beetle "Maria"

I bet your Empi carbs have crap in the jets on the 1/2 side..... Take apart and clean. |

Update:.........You ever mix the plug wires up? Heh...Heh... Amatuer hour over here. Luckily I didn't run it for very long sensing that something was off and will go back and adjust the valves before a second go at it. _________________ 83 Beetle "Maria"

Doesn't the Mexican engine have hydraulic lifters?
Never worked on one but assume the lash setting is much different. _________________ Gary

I may be wrong, but I think that the Fuel Injected ones have hydraulic lifters. This is most definitely the standard rocker style. _________________ 83 Beetle "Maria"

Rocker arms have zilch to do with hydraulic lifters which are on the inside of the engine.
Stock factory or 1:25 or 1:45 can be used when properly installed for Geometry.
Try adjusting the valves at "0" clearance (for hydros) and see how the engine responds. (thats what I have on my 1776cc Turbo)
OR the avg 0.006 with what the majority have. (NON Hydraulics) to see how the engine responds.
Hydraulics will clatter for 1-2 secs untill they fill with oil then will be QUIET. |
