Posted: Tue Jun 13, 2006 4:49 pm Post subject: Help with a Squeaking Clutch Cable |
|
|
Due to an irritating squeaking clutch cable, I replaced the pedal cluster, clutch cable, and bowden tube with new parts on my 67 beetle. I put plenty of grease on the cable and everything seems perfect for about three weeks, and then the squeaking slowly returns. I pulled the cable out twice now and re-greased everything. The guide tube inside the tunnel seems intact and the squeaking seems to come from the front of the tunnel where the clutch cable connects to the pedal. Does anything know if there should be a rubber grommet/boot at the beginning of the clutch guide tube where the cable feds into the tunnel? Could this be causing the squeaking? Thanks |

It's not your pedal cluster that is squeaking, by any chance?
No rubber pieces on the cable conduit tube, it's welded to the inside of the tunnel. Only the rubber boot where it emerges with the accel cable in back. I wonder if one of your conduit welds may have broken (not good)

Andy - the pedal cluster is new and moves freely without squeaking. I could not find any evidence of a broken conduit weld, but it is certainly possible. If a conduit welds is broken, would the cable work without any problem or noise for three or four weeks? Is there a preferred method of checking the conduit welds and approximately how many are there? Thanks |

It also could be a broken center clutch tube weld that broke loose and is rubbing in the tunnel. _________________ Glenn

Glenn,
What I cannot understand is that if the problem is a broken center clutch tube, why does the squeaking go away for three or four weeks after removing the cable and re-greasing? What is the best way to access the center clutch tube and where exactly is it located? Thanks |
