Check that price hike. The catalog was only .25, suddenly in 1965 it doubles to .50 WTF? Laughing

It says "As a buyer of HAND START you are intitled free to VOLKS-ECONO-MOBILITY"

"Send 25 cents for postage and handling"

The other mag lets you deduct the .50 if you buy something from them.

I have a JC whitney catalog from '68 with that pull start kit in it. It is part unber 75-1169 and listed for $3.69. The ad for it reads " Hand Starter for it 49-68 Volkswagen Beetle: Start your VW anywhere, anytime-even if battery is low, or if starter doesn't work. Hand starter is used in rope fahion, similar to outboar motor or lawnmower. Gets you going as long as generator provides spark. Saves expensive service calls or towing bils. Easy to store in glove comparment. Shpg 5 oz."

I also purchased one of these from Whitney in the mid 1970's, to hand-start the tired 40hp stale air engine in my first Beetle, a 1960. After only a few pulls the leather strap broke off from the handle! And yes, I still have the strap- just went to my stash box to examine it. The leather strap is 4' 7" long from the last handle rivet to the far end where the pin is. It is 1/2" wide.

Am I the only one here that feels that this is a good way to loose an appendage?

That pull start would be such a great way to embarrass your teenage child, pick him up from school and be sure to use that to start the car. Maybe that has something to do with my kids walking to 2 miles home when they missed the bus.

Hmmm . . . . . What an old school idea of that pull strap Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation

Just thinking about maybe using that idea to perhaps start a lawn mower as well Question Question Question

The lawn mower should be about the same horse power as that VW engine back then Question Question Question

Please let us know the results . . . if any . . . . . Popcorn

I had a friend who had one of the pull start kits.
He wanted to show a group of us how it worked.
So he wrapped it around the pulley and yanked.
Well, the handle broke off and he managed to punch himself in the eye with it and had the worst shiner I have ever seen !
