It depends on which sealant you use, I used some curilT and applied it on the two cas halves:

I see you used TS second rings. I was going to do the same on my refresh but decided not to after reading here. How did they work out for you? I read about ring flutter . . .

Back to the subject, I used Curil K2 last time and now have some Curil T. Probably stick with the K2 because the T looks too thick too me - anyone have any problems with T?

I have used Aviation permatex, gaskacinch, and indian head, all have worked.
My latest choice is pink subaru seal , like yamabond and curil. NO leaks.

Hylomar has all but disapered from what I can see. Does 518 really work, I have used it on heavy equipment but never a vw case, I thought it might shear with the case movement.

The biggest mess was one put together with bathroom silicone. Some people!!

I used 518 on my type 1 build. Used it instead of a gasket for the oil pump. Worked great! NO leaks! Very Happy

I found a good supply of NOS Hylomar under the Locktite lable at "Z&M Jeeps". They are selling the 1 oz tubes for $2. Shipping was $10, but I bought 10 tubes so total was under $3 a tube. That's less then the old, yellowed price sticker.

I haven't pierced the top of any of the tubes yet so I don't know the condition of the product, but it yields nicely to a gentle squeeze.

I came across this in the beginning of December, but with the price so good, I wanted to make sure I at least received the product before bringing it up here. According to the tracking records, it's been sitting in the UPS depot about 5 miles from my house for the past month! Mad

Permatex is distributing Hylomar again, but this time in the original Hylomar tubes and "Racing Blue" formulation rather than the "Permatex HPF" version that they formerly sold under license. You can get it at Harbor Freight.

I used Loctite 518 on the case halves and everywhere but the case hardware (nuts and washers) and cylinder / shim to case joint.

There I used Permatex 3H.

On first engine run, everything was leak-tight EXCEPT the cylinders, which leaked like a sieve. The 3H was not enough.

I have another thread out there on 2276 rebuild oil leak, and so far, I have heard:

1) Yamabond
2) Red RTV

for the cylinder bases.

What do you use for cylinders?

Permatex Aviation on the case halves, and Permatex Ultra Black RTV under the cylinders (as thin as possible-don't get sloppy with it). Both sealers can be tough to clean up during a tear down (especially the Ultra Black RTV), but if you're building an engine that is going to stay together for a long period of time (hopefully), these are what I recommend
Make sure you clean any surface to be sealed with laquer thinner
I tried the hylomar for the first time on my latest engine, and have a small leak. Oh well, I should've stayed with what has never leaked on me in 25 years. Good Luck

I use grey rtv on cylinder bases.
Harbor freight is selling hylomar racing sealer and it works good for case halves according to most folks I know.
The first hylomar permatex sold was way too runny, it was sold as a "gasket dressing".

Yamabond comes off with laquer thinner, it also is the best way I have found to remove 518. Basically laquer thinner is about the best cleaner for any of the gasket sealers including silicone.

How do you apply? do you still use paper gaskets? When you say bases, I picture just the bottom half, but are you referring to the entire base that fits into the case?

To my knowledge, there are no paper gaskets for the bigger cylinders. When I did my 94s, I dabbed a little on the lip that sits on the case. Don't put any on the part of the cylinder that slides into the case.

I use some Ultra Copper on the base of the cylinders... no paper.
