Two questions about my 73 Thing:
1. What is the large hole right behind the front seats in the middle of the floor center hump for? It has four small holes around it.
2. What are the angled square pieces of metal on top of the wheel wells right behind the rear seats? They also have four small screw holes.
Just curious... |

If your VIN number is stamped on the tunnel, adjacent to the large hole, then it's your transmission linkage access hole. If so, it should have a plate over it.
The two square pieces atop the wheel wells also form two triangles if looked at from the side, right? They are your 50 cal machine gun mounts. |

Thanks... I don't have the cover for the transmission tunnel. I guess I could manufacture my own. As for the machine guns, I guess there's no chance of picking them up on Ebay, is there? |

I'm not sure about 50 cal machine guns, but the military 181's had rifle mounts in the locations you describe.
The rifle used was a Heckler & Koch G3 model. |

Haha - nice retouch. Of course, those guys would be toast if that were actually the case.
The 50 Cal thing is real, though - comes from Hanno Spoelstra's site:

Do not waste your time fabricating a trans link cover. It is a very common VW part. This same part was used on every Type 1 VW for decades.
I wonder if we are talking about the correct parts as the hole that the trans link ocver is oval and is not surrounded by 4 holes. It is also underneath the rear seat in the center of the trans shifter rod tube |

The hole I'm talking about is right behind the front seats and behind where the seat belt stalks mount to the tunnel, well in front of the rear seats. |

Got a picture? Sounds like a "custom" option. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

This sounds like a previous owner cut the tunnel to gain access to the shift rod bushing bracket (the welds can break off), or perhaps to gain access to the heater cable tubes that also may have broken from their welds?
A pic would be helpful.
And the 50 cal gun pic is great. Too bad we cannot purchase one, even in a disabled and "barrel welded" form for display puroses only. These days of security would make that just about impossible. I did purchase one of the soldiers rifle, and had the barrel welded and the trigger mechinism removed. After two parade events, I was politly asked to leave the rifle home! |

there is a guy that rides aroung Long Beach Ca in a Korean vintage Jeep with the 50 cal on it. He hangs a flag on the barrel and drives all over. Cops harrassed him at first but dont take a second look now. |

I have no freaking idea what that is…??? I have never seen one on a stock Thing. Is your Thing a German military issue or a Mexican made? It might be a military attachment of some sort if your Thing came from Germany… (Weird hole, and doesn’t look like some hack job either.) _________________ Order of the Voodoo Spoon |

I looked into getting a demil'd BMG but stopped as soon as I saw the price tag. They're out there and pretty readily available, but the cheapest I found was $695 plus shipping, and then you had to assemble it on your own.

You all know that that the Thing was never a combat vehical, but was produced only for basic road transportation for several European armies.
I dought this is a 50 cal mount. You would have to use a tripod the size of the car to keep it attached, and even then you would probably have to strap the car down to the ground to keep it from flipping over when firing the gun.
Could it be a Ghia pan, I herd they wer interchangeble with Things. Actualy if someone could confirm this I would like to know for sure.
It would take somthing like this or a heavy jeep to handle a big gun like a 50 cal.

Instead of spending 500+ dolars on a demilled 50 cal
look for airsoft guns, im pretty sure they dont have the browning but they have all your small arms,
also
look for resin models, usually painted, usually cheaper than airsoft
I once saw a resin model M134 mini gun on ebay for 50.00 I forgot to swoop on it :(
But ive seen Resin 50 cal guns
Usuaully they come from the UK, i guess copyright, trademark is a little more lax? asia 2
http://www.specshop.pl/images/AEG-G3-SG1-TM.jpg
airsoft gun for the shows :)
I have a M16M203, M79 Grenade Launcher and M1887 sawed off lol
I thought about mounting the M79 on my car somehow, not for everyday duh,
maybe with a "In case of Idiot on road break glass" with a grenade launcher ready to be plucked out of its holder lol
ok maybe ive had too much coffee tonight

My Thing was made in Mexico, so the tag says. It's possible that the pans were replaced... I don't know the vehicle's full history. Maybe at one time it was used for a role bar system?
Thanks for your help though... |
