Although this question is regarding my oval, I think it's the best spot to post it.
My Jan. '54 came with the correct buckets, single rivet rings, and one lens has the vestigial circle and one does not. I figured one must have caught a rock and was replaced, so I ordered a new pair from Richardo.
However, after reading this thread I checked the numbers on my old lenses.
#1 vestigial circle, Oben and Hella at the top VW at the bottom part #25484, an "A" or triangle, and a "1".
#2 no circle in the center, Oben and Hella at the top, VW at the bottom, part #25484, an "A", and a 3.
Ok headlight gurus, what's up?
After new chrome, and lenses.

1-25484: Original '54 lens (first one I've heard of--not sure if different from late '54/early '55 2-25484 lens). Early sealed-beam lenses exist from 1953 with just the VW logo, not sure of part number.
3-25484: Late 1955/early 1956 only (probably same as 4-25484). _________________ Thanks,

This is mid-1954 or earlier Hella right-side barndoor headlight assembly. They were originally marked like the May 1952 assemblies shown in the picture below:
They may have also had a VW logo in place of the Hella logo. _________________ Thanks,

Just wanting to draw on your collective knowledge to make sure I'm correct. I think this assembly is from a 54, May 54 to be exact. It has the clear lens with the oval and the Hella and ol' timey VW logos. No Hella on the chrome bezel and two rivets (although one has broken off).
Thanks all.

Edited 03 July 2015, based on information learned since my original post 9 years ago--please see my comments at the end of each paragraph...

All barndoors rolled out of the factory with fluted headlight assemblies, as it wasn't until 4 April 1955 that buses destined for the U.S., Canada or Guam had the '55-'63 style (sealed beam) assemblies installed at the factory. Whether sealed beam units on barndoors were installed at the port or dealer is a subject for discussion. 7/15 edit: Not true--sealed beam assemblies (less the bulbs) were installed at the factory on nearly all VWs destined for the U.S or Canada as part of the U.S./Canada market-specific M018 option starting sometime in 1953.
By early 1953, Porsches (and most likely VWs) destined for states requiring sealed beam headlights received modification kits at the port (Houston is one port where this occurred). The clear lenses used in these kits do not have either a Hella or VW logo and lack the 'vestigial oval' in the center. The only markings are the word "TOP" (instead of "oben"), and the numbers "1-592" and "MADE IN GERMANY" at the bottom. All the assemblies I've seen with these lenses have single-rivet rings with the Hella logo. 7/15 edit: The port conversions did happen, but only until the cars came from the factory with sealed-beam assemblies installed. The "1-592" lenses are aftermarket "Reluma" brand, probably from the 1970s.
Beginning in about mid-to-late 1953, complete sealed-beam assemblies from Hella were probably shipped separately through the VW parts network for installation by the dealer. These units do not have a Hella logo stamped on the bucket; (usually) a VW logo, the Hella part number and a date code (L=1953, M=1954). The first batches had the single-rivet rings and lenses with a small Hella logo at the bottom and the faint "vestigial oval" in the center (note Everett's '54-'55 bus assemblies are date-coded 1953 and are from one of those early batches). 7/15 edit: Probably true, as '50-'52 VW owners in some states were probably getting tired of being hassled by the authorities for having "illegal" lights and were anxiously waiting for the dealer to receive sealed beam assemblies to swap in.
By early 1954, the sealed-beam assemblies were shipped with rings having two (widely-spaced) rivets and no logo. The small Hella logo lenses were replaced by lenses (P/N 25484-2) with a large Hella logo at the top and a VW logo at the bottom (and the "vestigial oval"). All the Hella assemblies produced through the end of 1954 had the coil springs around the adjusting screws.
In the first weeks of 1955, Hella redesigned the adjusting mechanism so tension was maintained by a single, bail-type spring. The Hella logo and both the VW (9-digit) and Hella part numbers are stamped on the buckets. The lens used on these assemblies were carried over from 1954 and used at least through the end of April (7/15 edit: probably through July).
I hope this answers some of the mystery, at least as far as sealed-beams are concerned. |

The date codes are 23 L and 24 L
L = 1953
23/24 = 23rd week and 24th week of 1953.
So those are from mid-1953
For the rivet by the mounting tab:
I believe 1954 headlight are dual rivet instead of single rivet unless you have a very early 1954 Bus.
I do not know if the lenses are correct.
Someone else will have to answer that.
They are very nice though. If they are a good price I would probably use them.
I had some nice 1953 headlights on my old 1954 Bus for a long time. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks for this information!
This can be right because the Speedo from this car is stamped 5.53 |
Is it a 1953 style speedo or 1954 style?
Is this Bus a very early 1954 Bus?
I have seen an early 1954 in the USA that had 1953-style headlights and I think they were original. _________________ How to Post Photos

Does anyone know when the nl, a and snake came in on the Bosch headlight lenses?
I've just bought a bit of Vw bus glass, Vw marked with the snake but no a or nl. It's not got the Bosch logo only the little symbol.
I'll do some photos when home but seems odd as I thought nl and a came in 1954 ish _________________ Wanted - OG 50 split bug door panels, brown mats and old running boards |

Bosch lenses are frequently date-coded. Look for a roman numeral, followed by a letter, cast into the lip of the lens. _________________ Thanks,

I don’t know if this post is allowed in this thread, but I was wondering if anyone had info on this bulb holder from my 52 standard? I’m uncertain if it is og to the bus. _________________ Looking for SO34 parts.
