While it seems that the subsequent owner of your Thing had a different "vision" than you did, it's obvious that that car was well loved. You can take heart in that, I think. |

Are you bidding on it? You might be sorry if you let it go again.....most likely all of us have a car that we wish we had not let go; you have a chance to get it back. |

The current bid is $4,050.
Reserve not met
btw.....this Thing is advertised with 2 cylinders!
Someone must have adapted a Citroen 2CV 602 cc engine.
I emailed the seller about the incorrect info posted in the ad.
The reply, "whatever number of cylinders came with car is the same number of cylinders it has now"
That's a confusing answer from a seller named "lewisvillevolkswagen" ....and I'm still not sure what the means.
I don't think any serious potential buyer would know what that statement means.
Inaccurate, misleading, uninformed, and uncaring information sometimes seen in these ads really burns my butt.
Here's just another example of a nice looking car being offered for sale by someone who cares little about the accuracy of information posted in the ad. |

Most VW dealers have NO CLUE on how to work on or anything about aircooled VWs. Many probably have no clue they ever made these things, literally. hehehe

Well, if in fact, this is a real, viable VW dealership selling this 181, they ought to have someone available around the shop to pop the rear deck lid, look at the dizzy, trace the plug wires, and verify the number of spark plugs present in the mill.
Obviously this ad was placed by someone who is net savvy, but doesn't really know a hill of beans from coyote den about VW Things.
We're talking about basic, accurate info to be placed in a reputable, viable ad.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to be able to figure the number of cylinders.
Just some basic observations and some common sense about info you are trying to relay to the buying public.
Yikes!

Soumds like B*** S*** now....the price is way to low for a Thing in the apparent condition that that one is. Whover this is, we need to tag them as BS merchants. My 2 cents. _________________ It's a Southern Thing, 73, stock.

I think a phone call might be appropriate.....
That seems like a rather interesting project for tomorrow.
I'll let all of you know the answers I receive.
Should be interesting.....
maybe.....
educational at least....
btw....my query is posted in the ad, along with the reply, near the bottom of the web page.

When I first clicked on this thread, I expected a total hack job. Instead, I think it's a pretty tasteful "update." Nothing that can't be undone, and it's unique.
If a dealer is ignorant about their wares, I don't mind; I can ask questions and do research, and maybe get a good deal out of it. If they're being misleading, that's another thing... |

It is sad that a Volkswagen Dealership trying to sell a true Volkswagen can't even take the time end education themselfs on the vehicle their trying to sell.
I have emailed as well a called the guy listing this Thing on ebay and educated him a little on the VW Thing. He had no clue where even the battery was
Talking with him he said that they are into for $7,800 (remember he is a car salesman ) if it was in the same condition as originally when I had it, I would look into maybe trying to get it back in my garage once again, I have two Things resting in my garage right now, so that would mean one of them would have to go.
It should be interesting to see how the auction does. As well as what type of answers he gives to other questions that arise from him listing the auction. |

Hello
Seller has added this in the text :
"Sorry for the confusion. The listing says two cylinders. It actually has four. "

According to the eBay listing page, the auction ended today and the high bid was $9600.
Looks like the dealership made some money on the car, according to mytype181's conversation with the saleman.
Maybe the VW dealership actually learned something along the way about ac VW's.
