I've never seen another one like it. Its a '74 and this is the original paint job. The car was purchased new by a good friend of my dads, and he has confirmed that it came from the dealership this way. As a kid I remember cruising around in this car when new. I've owned it for about 10 years now, its in fairly rough shape, but runs great.
My dad says he has seen one other with the same paint scheme. Any one else seen one like this, or know anything about it?

I like it! I wonder what I could do with my Thing. It's solid red... I thought about putting "Jurassic Park" logos on the doors |

Probably a dealership tyring to "beautify" a Thing.
I don't think VW ever painted one that way, but hey, anything is possible. |

It might have been from an unsuccessful joint venture between John Deere and VW. Is there a three-point hitch for a plow on the back?

Must have been done by the dealer, or first owner. U.S. Things were yellow, white, or red. There was a green thing, but is was the military olive drab color.
If you can prove this was some sort of special order, then you'll have a cool, rare color combination. Good luck with your findings; rarity is indeed a neat thing to have. |

I have an acquaintance who swears that when Things were sold in his area, they were offered in primer, for those who were going to custom-paint them anyway. I've never heard of that anywhere else, but who knows -- Things turned heads, but I'm sure dealers were willing to do anything to make sure they left the lots eventually... |

Ive had friends snicker and tell me that I should add a lawn mower attatchment to that 'Thing' and make my life easier, so the John Deere idea would be pretty handy! I know that the original owner didnt special order it, but I guess it is possibe that the dealership did. I also recall that it originally had an Acapulco top to match! |

What you have there is Avocado Green(L60F) with a possible dealer add on paint sceam.
Here are the other 3 colors
Sunshine Yellow (L11E)
Pumpkin Orange (L30H)
Blizzard White (L90H)
Acapulco color for Las Brisas Hotel in Mexico.
