86 VW Vanagon - $1500 (se rockford)
For sale 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon . This is a non running unit. 99% complete and ran when it was parked. The van would make a very good restoration project or an excellent parts car. Thanks for looking!

Van is from AK originally.
Non locking trans.
Drivers seam rust.
Bumpers are banged up.
Engine blows smoke.
Driveshaft removed due to vibrations.
Owner suspected non op VC.
New tires on steel rims.
Still its an 89, light production year and a bit more rare. |

It seems that folks see Westys "selling" for $20K+ and many think that is the going price. Two years ago in Salt Lake City we bought a good 91 Weekender for $9K; last summer a good 91 Westy with 95K miles went for $10K; also last summer we bought my current 86 Weekender for $6K; and a friend just got a nice 87 Westy for $6K.
Of course Syncros are understandably a totally different story, priced way out of reach for us cheap dreamers, probably just as well! |

The ones that actually sell for over 20k usually have engine swaps, tranny rebuilds, and serious renovation work on the body, paint, interior. It also helps to find Westys locally on CL and not on here where people can tend to inflate their prices. |

I know the auctions through copart sometimes require a broker but figured someone could get a good deal on '87 Syncro- doesn't look too bad either!!

Oh man, my copart membership lapsed a while back. It was a donation so it has built in karma. _________________ If happiness is being a mechanic, owning a Vanagon is nirvana.

Has reserve price on auction and a estimated $19,300 value listed- that hardtop syncro isn't going to be had for cheap. Hardly a good deal as listed.
I hope that it finds a good home. |

An object lesson in how to search Craigslist. I check every day and just search "Vanagon" but this one did not turn up because the word appears nowhere in the ad. I'd have been sorry to miss this one if I'd been looking seriously.
For those who sell this should also be instructive. Searching "Vanagon" on the same list under the Auto Parts category there is a complete tintop with neat aftermarket wheels that may never be seen by anyone else who might be interested in a complete vehicle. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

I find them sometimes searching "Vanagan" as well.
So some of the 86 Vanagons had round headlights? Says they bought it brand new so I assume they do know the year. _________________ _________________________________

not 100%, but I think euro market vans may have been round headlight after 85. Chime in if I'm wrong. |

No, you got it right - round headlamps all the way to the end in Europe. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX
