Almost seems like it could be the same van? Same color, in the Midwest, and the one in the ad has new mirrors and that driver's side seam repaired. |

I've been on vacation for awhile though... maybe that IS a good deal now. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

1990 Volkswagen Vanagon - $1500 (Crozet)
condition: good
1990 volkswagen vanagon odometer: 154000paint color : red type : van drive : rwd fuel : gas transmission : automatic title status : clean
Beautiful VW Vanagon needs engine work, I believe the head gaskets need replaced. There are a couple small dings, but rust free, with great interior. Also has a fold down back seat, which is great for camping. These guys are getting harder to find! _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Not dirt cheap but it looks like this was a caring and conscientious owner:

1989 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Carat Wolfsburg Edition White Star - $6000
condition: good size / dimensions: Full Size Passenger Van
1989 Volkswagen Vanagon GL odometer: 189000 VIN: WV2YB0256KH071814paint color : white size : full-size type : van drive : rwd fuel : gas transmission : manual title status : clean cylinders : 4 cylinders
1989 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Carat Wolfsburg Edition White Star
Vanagon body overall in good condition with a few very small, very light dents. Small rust patches around several of the windows (classic VW Vanagon window rust --- look it up on the internet). Original sliding door replaced with older Vanagon model year door (similar to original but without electric door lock functionality).
Interior seats covered with aftermarket covers. Front seat captains chair armrests removed --- but included in sale. Original Owners Manual included (some missing pages) - with remaining individual pages protected in plastic page inserts. Also included is a 12 page VW Owners Maintenance Manual - shows original purchase date of new 1989 Vanagon as May 6, 1990 --- sold by Hagestad Volkswagen in Thornton, Colorado. Cigarette lighter fully functional --- but wire not connected. During my ownership the Vanagon was kept in smoke free environment."
I am the 5th owner of this 1989 Volkswagen Vanagon GL. The early owners apparently lived out west (new dealer sold vehicle in 1990). The 4th owner was my neighbor's son (near Richmond, VA) --- who bought the van in the 2000-2001 timeframe. He had the engine rebuilt in Denver (a very solid rebuild job) just before I bought it from him.
From 2001 through 2014, I steadily replaced many parts in the Vanagon. Some were necessary repairs but many were replacements that I carried out because I simply wanted to improve the future reliability of the van --- and because the components were still available and relatively cheap at the time (no longer the case for many of the parts that I purchased early in my ownership history).
The van has current 2014 Virginia Inspection
Parts that I have replaced include but are not limited to the following: components:
All Standard "Tune Up" Parts
Battery
Standard 4 speed Manual Transmission (with rebuilt transmission)
Alternator (Rebuilt Bosch)
Steering Gear
Power Steering Pump
All Hoses
Disc Brake Calipers, Disc Brake Pads, Rear Brake Shoes
Complete Rear Drive Axles, CV Joints, etc.
Radiators --- both Front and Rear
A/C Compressor and Most Key A/C Components
A/C Hoses
Gas Tank
Special Gas Tank Air Emissions Relief Hoses
Master Brake Cylinder
Clutch Slave Cylinder
Fuel Injectors
Fuel Pump
Distributor
Miscellaneous Transmission Linkage Parts
Miscellaneous other parts (not listed above)
Complete external paint job
Aftermarket radio/tape player
Added New Carpeting
Shipping & Payment: Pick Up Only. Buyer is solely responsible for any pickup and shipping costs. The 1989 Vanagon must be picked up by buyer in Mechanicsville, VA --- on a date to be determined by seller. Seller travels between Florida and Virginia --- spending the majority of the year in Florida. An agreed pickup date in Mechanicsville, VA will need to be negotiated between buyer and seller.
Seller specifically sells this vehicle in "AS IS" condition and "WHERE IS" condition. Seller offers buyer no warranty or guarantee of any type for this vehicle. Vehicle is 25 years old and seller cannot offer a guaranty or warranty of service for a vehicle of this age.
Full Payment to seller for the full sale price of the vehicle must be made only by a cashiers check drawn on a local bank in the Mechanicsville, VA area. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

I went back and haven't seen this posted. I assume it hasn't, because the thing is still active.
1988 GL with *16,000* original miles in Houston (no salt down there).
I'd call it a grocery-getter, but it doesn't even look like grandma drove it more than once around the block every year for the past 26 years. I've sent my younger brother to look at it for me...

The black painted emblems and cladding make it look funny but it seems pretty clean.
Good luck with your purchase. |

Hmmmmmm..... Good deal?
Maybe........ If you are good at body rust repair.
It's a Lehigh Valley unit, lots of salt in the Winter, a lot of rust on the Valley's rolling stock.
This unit has a lot of visible common location rust. With this level of rust in the photos, what are the less easily seen areas like?
If you want a project unit that needs a lot of work plus rusty mechanical fastener aggravation, this could work for you. But a good deal?
I think not.

Now it is on TheSamba for 12000 and that is reasonable if the rust is not on all the fasteners. I think it's probably rusty. |

I just sold him alloys and 5 new bfg's
After he got it shipped he is eyeing up another syncro and is trying to brake even with the work he's put in.
I don't see may Syncro Westy's around here.
I think he will get his $12k.
I wish I had some $$$ _________________ --------------------------------------------------------

How much work could he have put in in that short amount of time? Looks like new wheels/tires. Yeah, he could probably get 12,000. Way too rusty for me and too pricey for a beater. What's with the grey Syncro and why the pic in the ad? _________________ 1977 Westfalia 2.0FI 4spd

The estimate posted in the ad for bodywork is low by about $10,000.
The listed estimate would barely cover quality color clear.
Not bashing the ad or the van, but let's be realistic about bringing that thing back, making it reliable and looking halfway decent. |
