Haha, I'm not sure I'd consider that a "Good deal on a NICE Vanagon" Laughing

Probably a fair amount of scrap steel there though. I'm sure somebody will pick it up.

I just wrote a post about one of the sellers on the samba. His ad was dishonest and misleading.

Here's the "Cheap" van he posted:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1721313

Here's my feedback:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=615716&highlight=jonestownusa+gmail

"Cheap" isn't always a good thing. Hope this helps the next potential buyer.

That's a shame because the original ad sounds like a van I would not mind having and at a fair price, but if everything is as you state then it becomes a whole different animal. Sorry it did not work out for you and thanks for the heads up. As a friend of mine is fond of saying, "Nothing is ever simple."

I think its really unfortunate that one of our hightops is on that van. Over the years that I have been providing hightops I have dealt with a lot of folks and have been able to be flexible in terms of making arrangements for payment, timing etc. I've only been disappointed once - by the seller of this van - there is still $$$ outstanding from his purchase of the top more than 3 years later. Lots of promises to pay up etc etc etc -
I have saved all of the email string back and forth between us - long and short of it is that he was not truthful with the distributor WRT to being fully paid up when he arrived on short notice to pick up the top - I was without access to my records at the time - he, "Pirate" knew he owed $$$ and misrepresented his status to the distributor.
It took a while until I resolved that one rotten apple shouldn't spoil the bunch - I have since trusted several folks who have had unusual situations and all have proven to be completely trustworthy.

In all fairness WRT the above post and the $$ outstanding on the purchase of the top, it is only fair to note that "Pirate" has now completely fulfilled his purchase of the top through a paypal transaction last night.
I feel that the entire incident has been unfortunate and wish "Pirate"all the best in terms of of doing what he has to do to establish himself as a valued member of the Samba community.

So... Yesterday this pirate was a shyster; today, after a public shaming, he's a "valued member of the Samba community"?

I don't think so, Tim.

C'mon - if you're going to use something that someone else has written as a quote, at least use enough of it to establish the context of the original post - by omitting the "in terms of doing what he has to do to establish himself as a" you significantly changed the intent of the post

http://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/4839676704.html

the price is way high on this at $13,995 but the 47,000 original miles on the type iv had me curious...

until I went and looked at the van yesterday and the overwhelming smell of mice shit and piss sent me running. The salesman said they "tried to get the smell out, but couldn't figure it out"... which means they didn't try at all, because opening up the cabinets revealed scatterings of scat everywhere.. gross is an understatement.

The van also needs a new tent up top.. but the engine bay was spotless as was the underside.

If you're on the hunt for an AC vanagon and don't mind stripping everything out and doing a deep-scrub on the van, steam cleaning the upholstery and re-facing every cabinet (and replacing the t-moldings) - I bet it could be had for way less..

Even though it's at a VW dealership, I knew way more than the salesman did about the car -- and I assume any Samba member would be the same. Basically: you've got the upper hand here. I let them know why it wasn't selling at that price, so they are well aware of the work that needs to be done.

Did you happen to look at the EVC as well? Just curious what they're asking:

We did. The van had like 85k miles, which is really solid for a 1995. They were asking somewhere in the mid 18's for the van, which frankly is a pretty decent price considering what they go for elsewhere. It's actually really clean and has a lot of service records -- though none of them were for a transmission fluid change, so they probably haven't done much to maintain that transmission. It also needs a new tent badly - the one they have on there is starting to crumble and rot in places. It has the hookups for the middle bench seat as well, but the dealership doesn't have the actual seat. The clear coat is gone from a lot of the top of the van and the poptop itself seems to be a replacement based on the service records. If you know EVCs well, the pleather guard over the rear popttop arms is also missing on one side, as is the front piece of the rear bench seat (frankly, those are ugly anyway and I would just make a wood one out of birch myself). There's also a crack in one of the rear storage bins above the hand shower and none of the curtains are in the van -- the blinds all work and look great, except the slider window window that would need replacing. You'd also need to get a new fridge vent on the side.

The positives are that it clearly hasn't spent much time in the heat or sun as the panels are all still a nice shade of gray (instead of fading brown due to the fire-retardant) and the velvet ceiling panels above the rear bench seat/bed and on the inside of the rear hatch are all still gray and haven't faded to the strange green color most seem to be these days. Oh, and the low miles. 85k on a 95 is pretty awesome for a EVC -- I didn't see any rust anywhere (i was climbing under the van in the showroom, much to Mr. Tynan's delight). In general, it's a clean van and will definitely make someone very happy with a little work.

Really, the only reason I didn't make an offer on it is because I'm sticking with 1997 and newer for our rental company because the newer vans have a few more safety features like dual front airbags and shoulder belts for the rear seat (hard to rent to families if they can't get a kid's seat in the back).

Edit: That van has been sitting there for months, so I can't imagine that they wouldn't let it go if you walk in and offer a reasonable amount for it. Walk in with a straight face and offer them $15k and I bet they come down. If not, walk out. They'll have to drop the price again eventually -- frankly, like the Vanagon, as a modern VW dealership have no idea what they are doing with campers.

ha! That thing has actually sold. I jokingly said I was going to buy it on Facebook and it turns out that a friend-of-a-friend DID buy it and is bringing it back here to Colorado. Apparently it's going to live in Leadville with it's new owner. I'm going to have to get introduced to the guy at some point now, and I'll get more photos.

Here's the photo our mutual friend send me:
