Seen on our local CL this morning, this one looks familiar from the Samba. Sounds like bad luck for the owner but might be a good buy for someone else. It's about five miles from me and I'm going to see it.
The van is also advertised on Samba.

1986 VW Vanagon Tiico Conversion Wolfsburg Weekender needs engine work - $6000 (Richmond, VA)
1986 VW Vanagon Westy
fuel: gas
odometer: 210000
title status: clean
transmission: manual
1986 VW Vanagon Westfalia Wolfsburg Weekender Camper. I am the second owner and have a folder full of paperwork back when it was newly purchased in Vermont. Currently has 210k miles on it. It had complete Tiico conversion in 2002 (at about 150k), including new 5 speed manual transmission by the guys at Foreign Auto Supply in Harpswell, Maine. We purchased this van from the original owner in January 2012. When purchased, I put new 15" Van Cafe wheels and Nokian tires on it. I purchased at 199k, so about 11k on them now. In 2013 we had the seam rust done, and some other body work from prior owner fender bender, along with new paint (all but rear hatch).
We attempted a family east coast road trip and made it to Richmond, VA. That's when we ran into trouble. After about 1000 miles of busy highway driving and traffic, the engine made a noise, started smoking and blew some oil. I pulled over, turned it off and had it towed to Art's Automotive Services in Richmond, VA. He is not a VW shop, not an engine shop, so he quickly looked at it and decided it wasn't something he could take on. A quick diagnostic noted oil where the coolant should be and no oil where the oil should be. It starts up and can drive around, however not road drivable in current condition. I don't know if the engine can be repaired or if it will need to be replaced -- we haven't had a specialist look at it yet, nor have we identified one in this area. I have called FAS in Harpswell and they still sell the Tiico engine for $2750 (new crated South African 1.8 Jetta Engine).
Living in Maine, we are faced with a decision -- have it shipped home to our shop and repaired or try and sell it where it sits -- in VA. We have decided it is time to part with our van. We love this van and have had many memorable camping trips in it over the last 3.5 years. With the proper repairs done, this van should provide someone with many years of great Vanagon life. I have included the photos I have (some are older), but can get more when I am back in Richmond next week. If you are interested, let's talk and I can tell you all I know about it. We do have a quote to get it shipped home to our shop and will do so if we don't find the right buyer.
Doesn't include rack, Yak box, bikes or bike rack.
Asking $6,000

see to me, that ad reads that we put more $$ into cosmetics than mechanicals..Yes I know, it's years ago but only 11k miles. shame but the van will continue to live on..
servicing the tiico (2.0l bubble block 3A (Audi) engine BTW) or swapping in a 1.8l will get it on and keep it on the road.. might even be able to swap in an ABA from a 93-99 jetta/golf though those blocks are 19mm taller and may need some clearancing. _________________

Yep...and I just left the area last week to come to New York for the summer. Sigh! Somebody in the know is going to get a good deal hopefully! |

Just got back from a trip to the Okanogan and saw this adventurewagen hightop for sale off on the side of the road. Solid looking with only a bit of rust at the drivers side seam, see pic, still has the original paint and dash vents so it may have a/c. Was originally $8,000 cdn but has been reduced to $6,000 I think it was a standard trans, was unable to see the mileage
Just to note this area of BC is quite desert like with little rainfall/snow so very dry and and not much rust on the cars, just sun faded paint jobs
Also to note interiour looked to be all in place but I'm not to familar with the Adventure Wagens and I don't know the owner _________________ Brent H

For Sale: Hubby made an idiotic move and wanted this van. Now for the right person this van could be AWESOME!!!!! However we do not have the time nor money to make this a "VW" person's dream!!! It is very large on the inside as the back seat lays down to make a bed. It can be used as a camper. The motor needs some work however it does run. It is a 5 speed with a super cute shifter nob. Text me or call me because I want rid of the van quick! Aggravated wife. |

Wow, that NY Syncro is full of unknowns and surprises at $12k. He'll soon find out what it's really worth soon enough. Here's the pictures:
