Thoughts on this 85 Westy? No rust or body damage. Recent repaint that was average. Stock 1.9L and transmission was rebuilt with no documentation but idles well and drives well. Original interior is very clean with absolutely no rips. Canvas is getting thin but no rips.

Here's my thoughts, I would *never* give a link to an ad of something that I was interested in buying. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Hey, the thread is called Good Deals On Nice Vans, not Good Deals I'm Posting But Do Not Expect Anyone Else To Follow Up On. If someone innocently posts about a van s/he is interested in and does not expect one of us to be struck with an urge to contact the seller, that is simply naïve. I would not, as a rule, do that. I would also not tell you sharks about a van I have my eye on. However, if I desperately wanted van X and one appeared here I might be sorely tempted to move on it if the poster seemed to be overly cautious or waffling. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

well i guess i am naive, but i always just assumed that anyone who read the thread title would only post finds that they thought were "good deals on nice vans". i also figure that if a person not familiar posts one and asks what we think of it, that is on no way an invitation to snipe the piece.but to each their own i suppose! i will continue to post awesome deals on decent vehicles for those on the hunt in this thread(like this fresh rebuild with a/c not the worst and a reasonable price for what it is: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/5258411404.html ) and i would direct anyone who clearly misposts here to move their post to a more appropriate section of the samba. _________________ '88Doka JX td

I post things I like when I see them. IF I dont intend to make an offer.
Why bring more bidders to the auction?
How about the new 83 westy on the classifieds? Its in MS. Looks nice and sounds like a runner. I love a white westy. _________________ Support Small Business.

How does this look?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1835454
Pros: fresh exterior paint, rebuilt engine, overall looks very clean
Cons: he doesn't have documentation of the engine rebuild, or really anything else. high mileage on the body.
How much weight should I put on the cons? Is it work ~$20k? |

Well you might move that fresh paint over to the cons column.
Not a factory color for that year.
You can see in one shot that the jambs were not done.
Is there horrible rust repair under the paint?
Who did the rebuild? Some rebuild companies are worse than gambling with a junk yard motor.
10,000 miles with no paperwork? Not a good sign at all.
Find out who did the rebuild and then call them and see if they have a record.
Ask to see recent pics from before the paint so you can try to spot rust. |

You arent naive, and the Richard heads who would snipe someone else's looking process will get their due.
Post the specifics, without giving location or using the text from the ad so that no one can google your ad.
Cultivate a list of people who arent in this category and use PM to get opinions is a safer strategy.
To all those who do snipe a deal - I dub thee early engine and transmission failure. _________________ .ssS! |

As a reminder:
The whole purpose of this thread was to alert those who are looking for a van to any deals that the rest of us might come across.
Kind of a Samba members help club.
It has been abused by those who are trying to sell their overpriced vans by self promotion. You know. "Hey, look at this great deal I'm selling!"
If you are looking for a van and post here with the deal you are looking at, then yes, that is naive.
Better to post a thread with some detail but no specifics like this person has:

I think you guys take too dim a view of our membership.
There may be a few snipers out there but I think if someone posted a van they are interested in , the odds of one of these asshats being close enough to ruin some guys deal are slim.
I think its way smarter for some newbie to take that risk and get solid advice from those of us who have more experience.
The real risk is buying a money pit, not getting sniped. |

if it's a great deal then it'll be gone before you can view it.
if it's still available 2+days.. then it's not a great deal.
play the shell game accordingly.
and yes I've posted a few in here. but not the ones I've gone to look at myself.. (which has been a while anyways..) I have too many already. _________________

Cheap sunroof van might be worth a look.
http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/5278137324.html
1985 Volkswagen Vanagon - $2000 (Powhatan)
1985 Volkswagen Vanagon
cylinders: 4 cylinders
fuel: gas
paint color: blue
size: full-size
title status: clean
transmission: manual
type: van
1985 Blue Bus with sunroof-running great with current inspection. Perfect for camper conversion, moving and hauling and lots of fun! Odometer stopped in 220,000's-put about 10,000 miles on it since, BUT have a replacement engine included with only 103,000. Lots of updates done-re-sealed gas tank, master cylinder, tie rods, clutch, brakes...the list keeps going. $2000 OBRO Text is best

Not mine. Seller must have edited his ad. I posted only two of the photos I saw in the original ad, the two that I thought were the most important; the exterior 3/4 front and the interior showing what you can see of the sunroof. Seller must have decided that fewer photos, less good and from farther away, would be just what he needs to spice it up. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

This one is a SCAM - I can't believe that every person who views this ad hasn't flagged it to take it down! It has already been posted on another C/L and several of us have gotten the lame response from the 'owner'. |

Yeah, "...Cash only! I can arrange transport at your expense..." Just leave the cash in a brown paper bag at a certain location and await further instructions. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |
