Maybe not quite as nice, but I'd probably prefer a van that has not been repainted so I can be more sure of what I'm getting. This one doesn't sound too bad and is newer for about the same money. Lots o' pix.

1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Carat (Low Miles) - $4300

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

1991 Volkswagen Vanagon

condition: good
fuel: gas
odometer: 115325
title status: clean
transmission: automatic

1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Carat 2.0 Automatic Engine
Only 115k miles
Original Paint

Runs and drives great. Third Owner. Bought this one year ago, then I bought a new truck recently. I decided to sell it so this money can go to my travels across Canada this summer. I would love to keep it, and it feels nothing like any other cars. It is a sweet ride.

Spare tire, car manual included. Carpet installed from previous owner.

Things I have replaced/fixed: New distributor, new coolant hoses and tank, new fuel tank/wires, new exhaust elbow pipe, entire steering system replaced, new starter, new alternator, new accelerator cable/pedal linkage, new ignition switch, new idle control valve, new electrical control unit, new passenger seat belt, new roof lights, transmission tune-up, cover up major rust areas with primer, new water pump.

Needs to work on/add, or missing: Needs to add Freon for A/C, but heater works just fine. Power window switches removed by previous owner. Has minor rust here and there - nothing major.
Vanagons from '86 to '91 usually have Vanagon Syndrome including this van. It means the engine would hiccup after going on 60 on highway for over 2 hours. It is a result from intermittent deficit in Air Flow Meter, and it would cost only 50 dollars to solder the circuit to fix that diagnosis.

Overall, there is nothing wrong with engine, transmission, electrical parts, except some minor body repairs. And the exterior and interior body looks little worn out due to age, but they can be replaced easily. This van is great for future projects.

NO PHONE CALLS, ONLY TEXT 3174o32o81. Please ask me any questions and I will be more than happy to answer them. $4300 is asking price.

The body on that Az van seemed to be nearly pristine, maybe in the desert all it's life, in the pics at least, it really looked nice.
D.C. rust potential would scare a West coast guy like me.

There are others in the area that have been on CL longer, or multiple times over months. Maybe they're just not selling in the mid-Atlantic right now, even at reasonable prices whether Westy or tintop. And the western guys keep describing fear of rust. It must be nice living out there where metal never goes away unless melted or moved, but until you see one of these vans close up you don't know and can't assume. Sorry, guys.

1987 2.1L Westy, $6500.00 - Bay Point, CA
is this a nice van? I dont know. Outside paint looks rough, but $6500.00 for a running westcoast westy isn't bad.

For that price id be all over it, but with no interior pics makes it questionable

Hey all, long time lurker, first time posting...

What do you all think of this one? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1985995

I feel like it's a great deal but the car's not moving. It's been on craigslist for some time now. Is it because CO rust?

I'd be all over this if I had the opp to see it in person...

This is super cool - a 16" syncro 3 knob camper with that clamshell pop-up roof.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2023876

The $35k ask seems kinda reasonable compared to a lot of Syncro Westies out there.

So heres a few pics on the bus I'm interested in, here is some photos and the CL link at the end, based upon the photos try to guess the price, and then tell me what you would pay... info its a 1980 diesel 5k miles on rebuild, manual tranny pop top (not a westy). says it drives great! and minimal rust.

Please dont take this the wrong way. That is just a passenger van turned camper. And poorly done by the looks of it. You could do better buying a clean passenger van and customizing it to a camper of your needs for a lot less money than the asking price of this van. $9000 is way too much for that. You could get a solid passenger van for $2k-$4k or less if youre lucky. then spend maybe $1k-2k turning it into a camper of your needs. My opinion, if you dont need anything more than a bed and standing room, would be to install a NAHT on a passenger van the has the a folding rear seat, which most do but some early models don't.

Someone who says a van like that drives great, or needs nothing, etc. etc. probably would say it's clean too.

I'd skip it. You can plainly see how the owner keeps things up.

I think you're mistaken about that. Not a Westy certainly, but there were plenty of other conversions out there (Country Home Campers and the like) and this may be one of those. That is a pretty distinctive roof and the interior cabinets, and probably the fold-down rear seat, are likely by the same maker. I do agree that the price is way too high; half of that asking price may be too high.

Yeah I was just curious what people thought. I have the same opinion as you, although I really love actual westys. Side note I didn't want to offend anyone if the owner of the van saw it in the overpriced thread

$200 is worth it for the wheels alone. No pictures though and I would be curious to run the VIN and see who owned it.
